SAT-60 Newbie-looking for HELP
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: hokey_days
I just purchased the Sat-60 and I want to upgrade to larger capacity.
I was thinking about just paying one of these online guys to do it, but they seem to charge a lot. I could handle paying $100 above the hard hard price, that seems fair, but some of them are charging as much as $269 above what I could buy the hard drives for.
SO I am gonna try it myself.
I have been looking over the hinsdale FAQ, and I seem to understand "most" of it.
I was looking to find anyone who has recently done a 2 hard drive upgrade on the sony sat-60 tivo/directv unit. I was hoping for some pointers, best place to buy drives, etc. e-mail me at hokey_days@yahoo.com if so, or post on here.
I have seen the Samsung 5400 120 gig drives as low as $125 each shipped. I have heard those are good-any comments?
ANy help appreciated.
thx.

You might want to read through this thread. It has good step by step instructions for upgrading. I used it to upgrade my T60 to a 120GB A drive, increasing the swap and the block size along the way (as well as making a backup - VERY important)

I am still trying to decide whether to add my original A drive as a B drive...so far 105 hours has been plenty. Adding the second drive is just a matter of using the mfsadd command.
Edited to put the link in! :)

As an owner of a SAT-T60 and a friend who helped another upgrade their T60, I would first do two things:
1) Make sure that you allow the 3.x download to occur and test it before you perform the backup (assuming that your T60 is still under warranty). My friend is having problems with the 3.x upgrade, but regardless it is good to have the latest software installed during the upgrade.
2) For safety's sake, allow the 90 day warranty to expire before you do the upgrade. You probably won't have a problem, but make sure the system works well before you toss out the warranty.
As the last poster mentioned, the Hinsdale instructions and tools work well, but make sure you read and understand the postFixes for MFSTools 2.0 swap problems
Make sure that you create and test a backup image of your hard drive that you keep on your computer/CD-R. In case problems come up, you can go back to this.
Finally, use this board to check out other's success and horror stories beforehand to weigh the risks and become well informed. Most people that follow the instructions will either find this easy, or at least not cause damage to their system.
However, understand that you are voiding the warranty and potentially throwing money out the window. I feel that the risks are low, and the rewards are worth it!
