CSI Finally Sucked Me In
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ever felt like an outsider when everyone is talking about something you haven't seen and you make a pack NOT to watch it because it was too popular. The original Batman show was like that for me as well as CSI. I kept seeing that it was top of the ratings but I just wouldn't give up Will and Grace or friends (I forget which) to see it. AND I was watching 3 Law and Order shows. Well with all the fall reruns lately (and the repeats on a cable channel) I started TiVoing CSI. It's seems to be a great show. One question. Is Miami good as well? I was sick this weekend and didn't have any good law shows to watch.

Miami is NOT good as well. Many believe that it is The. Worst. Show. Ever, but I just think it's not any good.

CSI > CSI:Miami
I wouldn't call it the worst show ever, but other than following the format of CSI loosely the show just seems to take a different (or wrong) turn each time. Where in CSI the main characters of the show interact often with the supporting cast - CSI:Miami focuses almost exclusively on the main characters who all seem to have the Miami Vice/GAP ad feel with a few exceptions. Emily Procter does a reasonably fine job as a ballistics expert aka "bullet girl" but more often than not the remaining cast appear to be experts on everything while always asking laymen questions to each other. (It's the shows weak method of cluing in the audience on their procedures.) The character of Tim Speedle aka Speed appears to take photographs primarily but is stuck in many other tasks when the shows wants to keep main characters only on screen. On top of all that, David Caruso's Caruso-isms are along the lines of a bad acting day in a B-movie action/skin flick.
It still may be worth 1 viewing just so you have a basis to appreciate CSI more.

I'm in total agreement with T-Veaux and MG in regards to CSI: Miami. I watched as long as I could but it eventually got to the point where I would rather watch nothing at all than another hour of CSI: Miami.

CSI: Miami doesn't have any of the geeky and nerdy flavor of the original CSI. I gave up watching it -- even though I love Emily Proctor, there's just not enough ooomph there to make it worthwhile for me.

Miami is not nearly as good, but I still enjoy it. I like it mainly because there is always something interesting happening and I always feel like I'm learning something when I watch (and I usually am).

Miami may or may not be as good but it has a trump card: Emily Procter. I don't like crime shows, but I love Emily and so watch CSI: Miami every week.

You should probably catch a couple of the shows to see for yourself whether it's a good show. You may like it. It seems to have good ratings.
Personally, I dropped the SP after the first month. I just don't care for it as much as the original. I'm not a Caruso fan but am a Delaney fan and now that she's gone it's not worth my time. Like the other posters though, I like Procter and miss seeing her. Hopefully when and if the show is cancelled she will move to Vegas :)

Like the original poster, I watched an episode of CSI because of all the good buzz about it. Unlike the original poster, I didn't care for it and never saw it again. But there are many highly rated shows that I don't watch, including ER, Friends, Survivor (or any "reality" show), Everybody Loves Raymond, Will and Grace, Law and Order, and, well, you get the idea.

I've been a big CSI fan since the shows first season but I agree with many of the comments made about the Miami version. The Miami version also seemed to start a trend this year of more and more gore content to compete with the detective work. The original CSI seems to be falling into that habit as well. It seems neither one can tell a good story anymore without lots and lots of interior body footage repeated over and over. I realize there was a certain amount of this in CSI's first season but it just seems to me to be multiplying.

Exactly so. BTW, caught EP on a celebrity homes show, and she looked completely unlike her WW/CSI-Miami image. Wouldn't have recognized her if she hadn't talked.

I love CSI and like CSI: Miami pretty much. I may be one of the few people that actually like David Caruso. I have liked him since NYPD Blue. And Emily Proctor, AKA "Bullet Girl", is great! I became a fan of hers last year on The West Wing. She's pretty funny on the late night talk show circuit too.
CSI: Miami definitely isn't as good as the original, but it does hold my attention. My wife & I agree that we just don't seem to care about the characters as much as in CSI. Plus my wife just adores William Peterson in CSI.
I am glad Kim Delany left the show. I liked her in her previous shows, but she just didn't seem to fit in CSI: Miami. I get tired of Khandi Alexander talking to the dead bodies though. She always says something like "Tell us who hurt you, honey." It's just corny.
My favorite "character" other than "Bullet Girl" is their H2! What an awesome vehicle!

I'm love the original and had high hopes for CSI:M. However, as most, the copy is not as good as the original. I have it as a low priority SP, with KAM=1 set, so if there's nothing better around, I have one to watch. This works fine as there doesn't seem to be much in terms of an evolving storyline. From what I can tell, everything seems to be self-contained. While CSI is largely self contained episodes, there are things that evolve:
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
1. Grissom's hearing
2. Paul Milander
3. Warrick's gambling
4. Sara's lack of a non-work life
I think these draw me in to the Vegas show more than the Miami show... Overall, I just like the writing and characters better on Vegas.

I agree! That drives me nuts.
I've given CSI:Miami several episodes for the characters to "grow" into their roles, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. :(

TiVo is your friend.
My rule is, do not watch CSI while you are eating dinner.

We watch all the L&O's and the CSI's. However, if an episode freaks my wife out the least little bit, she won't watch it before going to bed. So she'll watch it on TiVo, the next evening or on the weekend. Usually it's the stalker episodes that get to her.

I still haven't seen it.
Funny thing about it was the FIRST time I ever heard about the show was when TNN was promoting it, heavily. And all they would be saying is CSI coming soon or something, no premise, no recap as to what the show was about, both me and my wife would just look at each other wondering what the hell was so good about this show that they can't show a trailer for the concept or what have you.

That would be because it was .. uh... TNN. Wait, let me correct myself... the NEW TNN!

I have CSI: M one step lower in my SP list than Crossing Jordan. I prefer CJ, but if it is a repeat or is not on, I don't mind picking up an occasional CSI: M. But not all the time. No.

Well, it's all about the characters for me, which is why I watch the original CSI but can't bear CSI:Miami. For those of you who are also reading the various Buffy threads, or have seen my posts in the other CSI threads, forgive me for repeating myself.
It's about the characters and the interaction between them. The puzzles don't matter nearly as much as the way the characters get to the solution.
CSI is not nearly as well-written as Buffy, of course, but I like the ensemble. Where else are you going to find a show where the geeks and the nerds are the heroes? I like all the characters and think the actors are doing a fine job, but I'm especially fond of Grissom and Greg.

As a result of watching CSI and NYPD Blue and The Shield, the wife and I have started watching shows on forensic science. There are some really cool shows (mostly old repeats, but very interesting) -- for example, "Cold Case Files" hosted by Bill Curtis.
Create a wishlist with forensic* and view the upcoming shows. Watch a few of them, you won't be disappointed ;).

And especially (at least in the early days) a not-entirely likable geek. In a way, it's too bad they've softened Grissom; I liked it more when he was more of a jerk.
Still a great show, though!
Posted by: murgatroyd
Yes, but the thing that makes it work for me is that Grissom wasn't a jerk just because the writers thought it would be good to have more conflict on the show or for some idiot plot reason. He's a jerk because he's so wrapped up in figuring stuff out that the ordinary human stuff in life just doesn't register with him.
And that's what really happens with very smart guys. It's very true to life.

I would even say that it wasn't intended for him to really be a jerk--just a character that we learn more about through the series (at least the first season). After all, in the first ep he gets promoted into a leadership position he doesn't seem entirely comfortable with. He wasn't really a jerk; he just was in a new situation--one he didn't really want.

Warning! Warning!
This week's CSI on TNN is "Face Lift", the famous 'spontaneous combustion' episode. During the show, there's a teaser for the upcoming new-season CSI on Thursday.
You really don't want to be eating dinner while you watch this week's episode.

Slightly off-topic, but I noticed in the last issue of TV Guide that there will be a series of CSI comics. Anyone know the best place to get these from? Normal online stores such as Amazon I don't think carry comics...

There are also 2 CSI novels so far, written by noted mystery writer Max Allan Collins:
Double Dealer ISBN 0743444043 $6.99
Sin City ISBN 0743444051 $6.99
A third, Cold Burn, is scheduled for April (ISBN 0743444078, also $6/99).
Collins has someone working with him who is a fan of the show, so the books are pretty solid -- it's pretty much like watching a real epsiode of the show (not always true with a lot of TV tie-ins).
