Maxtor drive problems??

I upgraded my standalone Phillips TiVo early last year. I copied the original drive to a 20GB Maxtor DiamondMax D740X and added an additional 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax D740X. Everything ran fine for about 8 months. Then the stuttering and freezing started! Bad drive from everything I have read around here. The original drive functions fine in the unit. I ran PowerMAX on the two drives and the 20GB returned and error. Sent it back to Maxtor, got a replacement, same stuttering and freezing. At this point I restored the original drive to the new 20GB and the existing 80GB and tried running them each alone. Both drives have problems with freezing. Three bad drives?? Yesterday I pulled an 80GB Western Digital drive out of my PC and tried it in the TiVO, it seems to be running fine.

Is there a problem using DiamondMax Plus D740X drives in the TiVO?

Should I exchange both drives with Maxtor?

Any other suggestions?

I also added the Maxtor 80GB drive to my TiVo about 8 months ago, but I have not had any problems. In fact I added the Maxtor drive to both of my TiVo's, and they are both still purring :)

Were the drives clean or did you use the MaxBlast software on them??

Added an OEM Maxtor 120GB drive to my DSR6000, began getting stutters about two days later and with a week it was basically unusable due to the frequent stutters, hangs and pixelation.

Now running a WD 120GB drive with no problems at all.

Still waiting for the vendor to issue an RMA to replace this. Beginning to suspect they will not respond, at which point I will publicize the vendor name so that others do not run afoul of them.

I did not use MaxBlast to install the drives.

I added a new Maxtor 80GB to a friends Tivo. Within a week it suttered and died. It would just reboot at the "almost there" grey screen.

I took it out. Low leveled it, loaded his sony image back and it lasted 3 days before it died. It wouldn't even low level afterwards. I had it replaced under warranty and dropped the drive in yesterday. Time will tell if this one will stay up.

I am boycotting WD, Seagate, and Maxtor now for going to 1 year warranties. I have had to replace too many drives in that 2nd and 3rd year.
