Although I have been disappointed with many current BBC offerings, I happened to catch an episode of this series and have become hooked. It tells the story of an eccentric Scottish family and their "retainers" who are trying to maintain their vast ancestral estate in the face of rising costs and declining income. At the moment, they have fallen behind on their mortgage payments and workout banker "Stella," a sexpot-with-glasses type, has been seconded to the household to instill some financial discipline and hopefully prevent foreclosure.

The characters are well drawn and well acted, and the series is evidently set in an authentic Scottish country manor which, together with its grounds, provides an impressive setting. If you liked "Upstairs, Downstairs" and its derivatives, have a look. BBC is broadcasting reruns daily, and also maintains an informative web site about the show.

I agree that it's a good show. In fact, I've been hooked since the first season when TiVo made a Suggestion that I watch it.

I love this show, and I had never heard of it until TiVo 'suggested' it. In fact, this was one of the very first suggestions I received, and in case I had any doubts about TiVo, they vanished right then.

"Monarch of the Glen" is starting from scratch again on January 13, with the very first episode. Catch it weekdays at 4pm EST/1pm PST. Give it a try!

That main guy is a hottie thats all I was able to see as a plus for it. The rest reminded me of Days of our Lives.

Aye, laddies. I just stumbled across this show too. My wife likes it. Since it's something we can both watch, it's a keeper. Besides, it provides a credible excuse to sit back and enjoy a fine single malt beverage. :)

As my wife is Scottish, we are diehard fans of Monarch. BBC-America is one season behind the UK. Don't look at the BBC website (UK) unless you want to know what's going to happen a year in advance. I accidentally did that and discovered the death and marriage plots. :(

When the next season comes up BBC-A will do a very quick run-through of all the episodes to get new viewers caught up. The Tivo comes in very handy for that.

Does anyone know when the next season will be aired here? My partner is begging me to find out when the next season starts. I think he has a thing for Gollie.
