Great Article about the Fast, Quiet, and Off Settings on Maxtor Drives! Includes Benchmarks!
http://www.rojakpot.com/default.asp...&var1=14&var2=0
Background:
All modern maxtor drives can be configured using AMSET - Acoustic Management Utility. This utility sets the noise level of the drive to Fast (louder), Quiet and Off. You can download it from Maxtor here:

Additional Notes:
This utility must be used from DOS. You must connect the maxtor hard drive directly to your motherboard (not to a promise controller card) for the utility to work.
I recommend you set TiVo drives to Quiet.

It won't fit! Will it still work if I use a cable? ;)

Seriously, though..
Good info. However, in a TiVo environment, it's safe to leave AM on. I've got seven Maxtors, all running "stock" on AM (thus, assumed to be "/quiet"), and they all work fine (well, until they die, but that's another story).

Very interesting article! I did not realize that Maxtor shipped these drives with "Quiet Mode" enabled by default.

Actually, I've set my TiVo drives to Quiet. No problems and my TiVo drives are nearly silent. TiVo is not effected by the slower seek times.
