Tivo vs REplay on Tech Tv

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Tonight is an episode on Tech TV comparing TiVo and Replay.

TiVo vs Replay

The web page give both good marks for different stuff, I'm not sure how the TV show will slant it.

There was a big thread here a while back about Sumi Das and her comments about DTiVo on Fresh Gear a while back. I've seen the episode, and think she is full of sheep dip. 4 DTiVo units in 8 months? Sounds like she is either exaggerating or doing something to screw up her units.

"If you have access to a speedy Internet connection, as many corporations do..."

Huh? So is SonicBlue's market the corporate environment? Just sounds like a way of justifying an unuseable feature.

And isn't the DSR6000 the series one Phillips? Phillips doesn't make them anymore, and they sure aren't series 2...

What could you possibly do to unknowingly screw up a DVR ? They just sit there and work. Unless you are saying she's lying (*about 3 bad Dtivo's).

I'm saying she is either exaggerating about being on her 4th DTiVo in 8 months or there is some external variable causing her problem (no ventilation, bad outlet causing power surges, etc.).

I think his point is that if she is telling the truth, her experience is hardly commonplace. She should have investigated this situation to see if others have had the same problem or if she's just unlucky. That kind of thing DOES happen, just very, very infrequently.

For a reporter, she seems to be very biased and/or inaccurate. She says she's testing a DSR6000 with ver. 2.0 of the TiVo software, but the review says it's a review of the Series II DTiVo. Not possible. She also describes the "bad" remote that most of those DSR6000 units came with. If she had bothered to check this out, she'd have found that it's a FREE replacement. You don't have to spend an extra $40 on the remote.

She also describes her frustration with wanting to adjust the recording quality - shows a complete lack of understanding DirecTV.

what network is this on?

Posted by: NinerK

Head's up: the Tivo segment is on 25 minutes into the episode of today's Screen Savers.

Sleestak-it is on TechTV Network.

Posted by: NinerK

that was a lame comparison. 35 HOURS to send an hour of HDTV??? The Replay unit looks twice as big as the Tivo....

TechTV is the channel (354 on DirecTV). The Screen Savers is the particular show being talked about in this thread. I have also seen TiVo vs. Replay sections on Fresh Gear.

That was a horrible segment... the reviewer really sat on the fence, liking both products...

But at the end he did say that for most users, get the TiVo..

You got that wrong. Replay 5000 can not Send HDTV content. Because it can not record HD. I wish it could Believe me ;)

Nothing wrong about liking both units for what they do differently.

He said the Tivo box was best for your avg home couch potatoes.

And that the Replaytv 5000 is best for your geeky
Tech types. I would guess most people watching Tech tv. falls in the Geeky Field.

The Replay 5000 did "look" nice up there. It would have been nice if the reviewer showed some of the 5000 channel guide or Replay guide
to give the audience an ideal of how things works :o
