Buffy season 3 DVDs out tomorrow...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

As someone else mentions about Tuesday nite programming, thank god for two tuner DirecTiVos (ok, now it's supposed to be DirecTV PVR, but whatever!!!)

I never could make it through the original seasons that were airing on FX, since at one point in time they went from one episode a nite to two a nite, and I wasn't expecting it and therefore missed successive episodes and parts of plot lines

I gladly plunked down the $$ to get Season 1, and when Season 2 became available did the same.

Now Season 3 is being released, and I'm back again to plunk down for another round.

From there I think I'll wind up sticking with just watching repeats or missing the middle seasons, but who knows, if the deals on the sets remain reasonable, I may yet grab them.

For anyone that is looking for decent prices on them, www.bestbuy.com has it for $39.99 (ignore the listed price, click on add to cart/pre-purchase to see the real price), with free shipping (tax applies if you are in a tax happy State like I live in).

Circuit City was about $5 higher.

At $5 / DVD disc (6 disc set), it's about like paying the TiVo fee for a month, so I'm game.

Having *not* seen all of the earlier episodes (I jumped in towards the middle of last season), I am looking forward to these earlier episodes, and with them on DVD, I'll have plenty of room on the (still not upgraded) DirecTiVo's to hold more episodes of Alias / 24 / NYPD Blue / current season of Buffy / 70's show, etc :D

Somebody must be using "politician math" or something. $5 x 6 = $30. The cost is more like $7/disc after tax. Still a good deal.

And in case anyone doesn't feel like waiting for free shipping from BB, you can select In-Store Pickup instead. Also, if you have a Costco or Sam's Club closer, they're prices are $39.99 and $39.92, respectively. I plan to go down to Sam's tomorrow, and if it's more than their web page (and I can't get them to pricematch), I'll come back home, order online for store pickup, and then go back and pick them up at the lower price. :) It's close enough to me (unlike Costco) that it makes the extra effort worthwhile, assuming a big enough price difference.

Yup, realized the math was off later, but then again, I could have been counting on the packaging being worth $9.99 ;)

-- Hey, pretty pictures of Buffy (SMG) and Willow and friends, that's gotta be worth something ;)

Got mine in the mail on Saturday. I preordered from DeepDiscountDVD.com for $43.91 delivered. Usually the preorders on new releases arrive a couple of days before the actual release date.

Season 4 due out in June.

Xaa - any news on Alias season 1 DVD's? I haven't been able to find anything out about those, and that's something I'd dearly like to have (and hope that they release before they blow an opportunity to sucker in, I mean lure in more fans for that great show!!)

I don't know anything about it, but I sure would buy it.

There is a strong rumor that Alias Season 1 DVD's will be released in September 2003 (around the start of the next season I believe). I for one have never seen the show and am looking forward to being able to watch it from the start on DVD. :-)

Note: My local BestBuys all had defective shipments of Buffy Season 3 and had removed them from the shelves. They claimed that disc 3 (I think) was scratched in 80% of the sets. If you're one of those folks that buys things and doesn't watch them immediately you might want to do a quick visual inspection as I have no idea how wide spread this issue might be.

I was wondering how Best Buy managed to sell out on the first day. I guess this explains the empty shelves better though.

Was anyone else upset that Fox included coupons for the previous 2 seasons, but offered nothing to the people who have already shelled out $100+ for all three seasons. Grr! Arrgh! I guess I should just be happy that they don't already charge outrageous amount like STTNG and X-Files.

According to the DVDTalk forums, it's mostly Disc 1 (and occasionally Disc 2) that are sometimes/frequently loose, i.e. off the spindle. This causes them to get scratched as they move around in shipping.

In my case, I picked up the last copy at my local Sam's Club last night for $38.87 plus tax. Of course, maybe it wasn't really the last copy, and was just missed when (assuming) they removed them from the shelves. None of my discs were loose, although discs 5 and 6 were on the wrong spindles. My Disc 3 does have a couple little "things" on it that aren't scratches, and they're real small. I've seen similar flaws on blank CD-Rs and they didn't cause problems, so I'm not too worried. I will try to get around to watching them all in the next week or so, though, just in case.

The UK sets come in a small hardcover binder, with all the discs in protective sleeves. Far better than the North American discs IMO. Had they used the UK packaging, this problem wouldn't have happened.

Nope.

Our transactions for the first three series are completed. Why should Fox give you back profit after you freely bought at the old price?

Let's put the shoe on the other foot. Suppose season 4 comes out and it's $10 more and you still buy it. Should Fox expect you to give them an additional $10 for the previous years after the fact now that they know you're willing to pay it?

You have the same offer as anyone else. A coupon, if you want to use it go ahead, you're entitled. If you already have the sets and see no value in using the coupon, that's your choice.

I pick up my copy Tuesday morning (was traveling between sites and just happened to drive by the Best Buy ;) ) and my disc 2 was loose too. Visual inspection looks ok though...

You can always give the coupons to someone else, perhaps to bribe them into converting to the Cult of Buffy... :D

Yes It would have been nice of FOX to give their old customers a bone for being a customer of their past products. But no I'm not upset. Fox is a Business and Businesses do not give back profit. If you feel Strong enough about it.... Don't buy. And write a snail mail letter to FOX telling them why . ;)

I guess 'upset' comes off a little strong. I wasn't looking for a rebate or anything. It just would have been nice if they were going to throw in some coupons to at least toss me one for Season 4--that's all. Companies use loyalty incentives all the time.

I went to Sam's Club over lunch, picked up one copy and brought it home. Opened it - disk 2 was loose and pretty heavily scratched. Took it back at the end of the day, asked for an exchange - and to open it in front of them. They agreed, and brought one out (it had been in store lock-up for some reason). Opened it - disk 3 this time was loose and scratched, though not as heavily.

Immediately asked for credit - wasn't willing to chance a 3rd one. I'll wait a little while for a new run to come out.

Why didn't you swap Disc 2 from the new set (unscratched) for Disc 2 from the old set (scratched) and just make a complete set?

A coupon for season 4 would rule!! But they know us Buffy heads will buy anyway. the coupons are for people on the fence.

I think that it would've been harder to explain mixing and matching DVDs to the customer service person than just saying "Look - had two damaged sets, give me my money back please." As it was, I got out surprisingly easy with a credit back to my card.

I did end up caving and going over to Best Buy, where they had a decent selection at a cheaper price than Sam's - plus their DVD sets were out in the open where I could shake them and listen for plastic-on-plastic rattling or sliding sounds, and not packed in a gigantic plastic carrier that would make it difficult to hear the sounds from inside the packaging.

Shaking DVD sets got a few strange looks, but I got one that was completely unscratched.

I agree with DanT, but then I'm the person who has to send the returns back to the vendor -- I'd rather swap the discs on the spot, send you home with a good set (thus saving the sale) and only have one set to return, rather than losing the sale and having to send 2 sets away.
