Buffy/Angel question

I LOVE Buffy.
I haven't as yet seen any shows of Angel, but I see the first season is out on DVD. my questions are:
1. Should I get the Angel DVD's? (I assume yes here)
2. At what season of Buffy did the show Angel begin? Right now I'm watching season 3 of Buffy on DVD concurrent with the new eps. it makes sense for me to begin watching seaon one of Angel when I get to that point with Buffy.
3. how many seasons of Angel have there been?
Thanks,
Xaa

The first season of Angel wasn't that great IMO. The "vampire detective" bit had too much detective, not enough vampire. It's improved, although it's never been as good as Buffy once was IMO. The only reason I'm thinking about getting the DVDs is because of one Buffy story arc that ended on Angel in season 1 (well, not quite ended yet, but was last seen there)
Angel spun off after Buffy's third season, so this would be Angels 4th season.

In our household, we regard "Angel" as filler. We record it, but we only watch it when/if we're out of everything else we normally watch. It's entertainment, but not nearly as good as Buffy.
Angel, easily one of the coolest characters on Buffy, got uncool quick (even kinda silly) when he got his own show. They talk a lot about how he broods all the time, but he actually laughs a lot and does the occasional sort-of slapstick shtick. On the other hand, Wesley got cooler, and Cordelia became a bit more interesting. And some of the villains are pretty good.
Of course, it is Joss, so there are often really great plot twists. But the whole show just never quite seems to gel.

I don't get UPN or WB to see the newest Buffy or Angel. I just recently got satellite and have to watch Buffy on F/X to cath up. But is there any station that has Angel on syndication?

Current Angel episodes are repeated a week later on one of our FOX stations, but that's up to the individual affiliate, not the FOX network. Your TiVo should know if anyone on your system is rebroadcasting it.
I'm pretty sure no one is showing the old seasons of Angel in order, as FX is doing with Buffy.

Angel season 1 was concurrent with Buffy season 4. Since Buffy is currently on season 7, Angel is now on season 4.
Angel started slow, but I recommend you stick with it. There was the occasional good thing scattered throughout seasons 1 and 2. I think it really picked up towards the end of season 2, and has been consistently good since. I have enjoyed Angel season 4 more than Buffy season 7 so far this year, and some people around here are saying Buffy season 7 is the best Buffy ever (I enjoyed Buffy season 3 more personally...)

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help.
Nice to see the Good Dr. Strange again. You've help me cut my teeth on Buffy and I appreciate it.

Yes, the "detective story of the week" bit on season 1 wasn't great, but Doyle was--definitely worth watching if just for him.

Start watching Angel now. The first season was not good.

I have a rule that whenever the writers add a baby to a show it means stop watching because the descent into crap has officially begun. Angel is no exception in my opinion, although the show never really hit a high point anyway.

I actually like Angel... It took some time to get rolling, but I think that over the 2nd and 3rd seasons, it was a better show than Buffy was. This season, Angel has taken a turn for the worse, and it's all that damn kid's fault. Get rid of the brat, and get back to a good show.
I'll definately be picking up the Angel season 1 DVD, but I might wait until Buffy season 4 comes out, since there are cross-overs, and related episodes.

While you are correct that this is usually "jump the shark" teritory, Mutant Enemy has a way of pulling it out.
Dawn on Buffy is a good example of this.
Although I am wondering about that last episode......
I guess someone should shoot me because I liked the first season of Angel. Not only did it have the funniest scene with Spike but I found the whole Doyle arc compelling.
I'll get the Angel set but I think that I'll hold off on watching it until Season Four of Buffy comes out (hopefully S4 will be widescreen)

Not at all. I think the first season was the best, too. And I think, basically, it's gotten worse as it's gone along. Doyle was GREAT. Gunn is boring (and a bad actor, too). Lorn is annoying. The baddies have gotten less interesting, too, I think. Lyndsay (sp?) was excellent, Lila was originally pretty interesting but got less and less so, Holtz was just dull, etc. I think they've taken a lot of good potential and squandered it.

Hmm. I was late getting into Angel - I avoided that half of the Buffyverse, just because I didn't have the time to get into another mythos. About half way through last season, I picked up the series, and I'm glad I did.
Angel does, indeed, have it's own voice and own mythos, even though some characters originated in Sunnydale. Angel is quite different when given something productive to do, instead of standing around, dark and brooding. And it's rather surprising how much Cordelia changed from her Queen C, leader of the Cordettes.
Just as many Trek fans argue whether DS9 (another series with a very different feel and mythos from predecesors) was totally awesome or not worth watching, you'll likely find the same thing with Angel - it takes some watching for a while to pick up on the unique parts to the show, but once you do, you might find you enjoy it just as much or possibly more than Buffy.
I've only read up on the first season and a half, so I don't know how those episodes stack up to the current ones - but I'd definitely say that if you can take the time to learn the background of the show, it's worth giving it a try for a few weeks to see if it's something you enjoy.
I definitely consider the current episodes as good as Buffy - just in different ways. I intend to go back and watch the first season too, as soon as I can get the DVD box set.
(excepting the horror that was the end of "Reign of Fire"... I'm blocking that out of my memory...)

Xaa,
Definitely watch Angel concurrent with Season 4 Buffy, as close to the original airing sequence as you can manage. When Angel first came on it ran back-to-back with Buffy (Buffy at 8, Angel at 9, if memory serves) and there were crossover episodes. I have a friend who was taping on two sets of tapes while I was taping two-hour blocks and she told me then that doing it my way made more sense.
I don't have the original air dates handy but if the DVD's don't list them you could probably get them off the net (from epguides.com or the various Buffy & Angel sites).

Gotta disagree!
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
How can anybody resist his rendition of "It's Not Easy Being Green" -- it's an amazing cover!
I want the CD!

I am a musician and a singer, and I certainly appreciate his abilities, although I find his singing style to be too affected for my personal tastes. What I find annoying, though, is his character, not his singing. He makes some little jokey side-comment virtually every time he's in a shot. I also get tired of that show-biz kind of personality (calling people "dollface," etc.) very quickly. It was sort of fun when he was a peripheral character, but now that he's a regular it's just...well...annoying, as I said.
Of course, these are probably the exact qualities that his fans (of which I'm sure he has many) love about him.

And Lorne wasn't supposed to be a regular this season. He (Andy Hallett) was on a British TV show last year (during the summer hiatus) and said he was leaving the show. He'd be in a few eps, but that's it. I'm wondering now if that was all just a set-up for the whole Vegas plotline. If not, then he's gonna be written out sometime soon. BTW, I don't want to know, so don't bother posting here if you know the answer. I'm a spoiler-phobe. :)

TNT just bought the rights to Angel syndication - "will begin airing it as early as this fall". http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?30353

My SO and I love Angel, and we will definitely be getting the box sets. Contrary to the person who said it was just filler for when nothing else was on their Tivo, our recording of Angel is one of the few "must see as soon as possible" shows on ours! :)

The first season of Angel has Oz showing up, Buffy (twice) and Faith (2 eps). I didn't start watching Angel until the end of season 3 and I was a little lost with what/who the characters were. I have the S1 DVD and have enjoyed them all. Yes, some of the eps are filler, but that's the way of series TV.
