Where is HBO heading?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Sex and the City, just about done. 20 episodes left, first a break, then 12, then short break, then 8. That's it, then done.

Sopranos. Likely a long break before the next season, which is reported it's last.

No rumors yet on when Six Feet Under will return, but hopefully soon.

Arli$$ - gone.

Dennis Miller - gone.

Oz - almost gone.

Mind of the Married Man - should be gone in many folks opinion (gotta say I fall with that crowd. Show just never grew on me).

Bill Mahr (spelling?) getting a show, but he's a liability in many folks minds.

Long breaks between recent made for HBO movies and series (with AOL-TimeWarner swinging budget cut axes).

There's a long list of great stuff that HBO has done, and for which I continue to pay for a subscription.

There's still a decent list of stuff I'll be watching as long as it's on (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Six Feet Under, and Sex and the City and Sopranos - as long as they are still on), but I'm left wondering what HBO will do next to keep me tied to them.

The Wire was interesting, but not something I felt I couldn't miss.

I haven't watched 'Live from Bagdhad' all the way through yet. Normally a good HBO original movie would have me watching it several times, and wanting more.

I miss the good years, a few years back, when there were several good original movies, plus From the Earth to the Moon, and more, that just grabbed me and made me glad that I sub to HBO.

Band of Brothers was totally awesome, though unfortunately started airing just 2 weeks before 9-11-01, so it fell victim to the depression that set in for a while after those horrific events.

Now I'm feeling that perhaps I could turn away from HBO for a while, and not feel bad about it.

I think the Soprano's is planned to come back pretty soon.

HBO has done well up to this point with all the shows you list. Let's give them the chance to come up with something new. The problem is of course that something new always takes a little while to get used to.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is a terrific show. The next best thing to more Seinfeld, and occasionally even better.

And they just gave Deadwood a green light, another promising show. (I believe the premise is "lawless 1870's western town grows up.")

SFU starts in March.

They have several new dramas in the pipeline, since they know all their hits are leaving soon (except for Six Feet Under). They also save a lot of their original series and movies for spring and summer so as not to compete with the glut of network programming in Sept/Oct and January/Feb.

I heard they have a 13 episode drama about a seedy traveling carnival in the 30s or 40s. I am looking forward to that one.

I think a lot of the older shows are showing their age and need to move on anyway. Some of the new stuff in the pipe looks quite interesting:

"In preparation for the looming changes, HBO is readying its next generation of programming. Production on "Six Feet Under's" third season is under way (debuts March 2nd), and rookie drama "The Wire" has been renewed for a second season. Larry David "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is also set to return for another batch of episodes, and "Project Greenlight" also is coming back.

"Additionally, HBO just ordered David Milch's western "Deadwood" pilot to series for debut next year. "Carnivale" and Steven Bochco and Alison Cross' "Marriage" also have series orders."

""Real Time With Bill Maher" and "Da Ali G Show," featuring British comedy star Sacha Baron Cohen. "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry" and "On theRecord With Bob Costas" will both return for their third seasons."

"HBO has set its documentary schedule for the first half of this year. Among the upcoming documentary specials are Oliver Stone (news)'s "Commandante," a portrait of Fidel Castro; "The Kid Stays in the Picture," based on Robert Evans' autobiography; RFK daughter Rory Kennedy's five-part "Pandemic: Facing AIDS (news - web sites)"; and "Unchained Memories: Readings From the Slave Narratives," based on interviews with former slaves."

"Dennis Miller and Ellen DeGeneres will return to the
pay TV network later this year in standup specials."

"New "America Undercover Sundays" presentations have been set for January and February. Among those titles are: "The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Mark Kerr," "Taxicab Confessions of 2003: Girls Like It Hot," "The Virtual Corpse," "Judgment Day: Should the Guilty Go Free," "Cannibal: The Real Hannibal Lecters," "Autopsy 9: Dead Awakening" and "The Best Sex: 12 Years of Real Sex: A Dirty Dozen."" (It looks like "Animal Passions" the zoophilia docu was pulled from their schedule.)

"HBO Sports has produced the documentary "Jim McKay: My World in Words," which is set to premiere at 10 on Feb. 24."

I myself rarely watch any of the theatricals on HBO. It's all original series and docu's for me. All of the above quotes were from a Reuters news story.

Didn't HBO have a "Alexander the Great" 10-12 episode miniseries coming out in 2003?? Haven't heard anything of it in quite a while..

So Arli$$ officially was axed? I must've missed that. At least I can remove it from my SP list now. :)

I hope so. I recorded but still haven't watched Band of Brothers so I will really be behind if I record that one. I also have From Earth to the Moon and haven't watched it either. The made for HBO miniseries make HBO a great value in my opinion, I know all of these miniseries will be very high quality.

I caught it, now I wish I could get rid of it! This show must of been picked off of some cable access network. Wayne's World is a parody, remember? I TiVo'd it.. I have never been as fleet of foot as I was to remove that show from my drive. I was embarrassed to even have recorded it.

Notice to TiVo Inc. If this show was a listed in my log file, please purge file now! I don't want anyone to think I want to see this show again!

Last I heard HBO was running all 4 seasons of Sopranos then would air season 5. 13 episodes a season, 1 episode a week equals 52 weeks before season 5. This is really lame if it's true. Then again season 4 was so bad that I kind of wish they would just cancel the show all together.

Infoguy, I watched some of it, but had to leave for out of town. I was kinda take aback by the cheesy set he has, but. The Phili cop skit I saw. Awesome! The way he always had his gun out and was swearing on the walkie talkie was funny.

Yes, this show isn't for everyone, but it has potential. Not saying it's a Curb Your Enthusiasm or Dave Chappelle show, but I'm not saying ax the SP right away. Give it a chance. I've seen worse.......Namely, Mr. Show. I gave it a shot, my brother liked it, but it just didn't do anything for me.

Go see Old School, you'll thank me later.

I think they need to give Garry Shandling a show again.

AMEN! Larry Sanders was one of the best shows ever on HBO!

I watched the pilot of Carnivale and it wasn't bad. It was interesting but it seemed to be more like a Showtime series just becuase of the strangeness of the storyline. It is something I will be looking for but I don't see it succeeding on HBO.

Somehow I doubt that HBO would spend that kind of $ to greenight a 13 episode series just to cancel it soon afterwords. Albrecht and the creative people at HBO are pretty savvy about the material that best works on their channel. The stranger the better I say. Whenever I think of a Showtime project I don't think "strangeness" but "poorly conceived".

I have liked the Showtime series such as Odyssey 5 and a couple of others that now escape me, but when I think of HBO I think of series like OZ, Sopranos and Sex in the City. I don't think of a show about a traveling circus and something that concentrates on the sideshow and some supernatural elements fitting in Hbo's normal lineup. I agree the stranger the better, and those are usually the shows I like but the mainstream audiences usually don't, hence the reason very few of them stay around. I hope it stays around from what I saw but I have a difficult time seeing it happen based on HBO's current audience. I doubt Hbo would also spend the money, but then again they may be taking a gamble to try something new so it doesn't seem like they are just trying to do a series similar to what they have been successfull with. I hope I am wrong.

Now if Hbo would bring back Mr. Show and Tenacious D...but that's a completely seperate topic.

I'll back you up on this one. I also heard somewhere that this was the plan. In fact, I distinctly remember telling my brother about it since he's been away at college w/o HBO and never saw much of the show.

Then again, when you say "Sopranos" and note that it's only a 12 month break this time, many people are more than content with that. I don't care who they think they are...they're actors. Paid to act. So stop taking a vacation, doing movies, etc, and act.

It was sent to me as part of a survey through Epoll.

Jeremiah? Stargate SG-1 (moved to Sci-Fi Channel)? The Outer Limits (moved to Sci-Fi Channel & cancelled)? Street Time? Soul Food? Queer as Folk? Zalman King's Red Shoe Diaries? Zalman King's chromiumblue.com? Kama Sutra? The Chris Isaak Show? Penn & Teller: Bulls**t!? Family Business? I probably missed some.

For a show that they say has been renewed for a second season, Showtime sure doesn't seem in a hurry to show more episodes of Jeremiah. And only Real Time with Bill Maher is drawing me toward getting HBO.

2 other Showtime shows that were great and cancelled after 1 season were:
Leap Years
Going to California

P.S.: "Six Feet Under" starts this Sunday!!!!
