Hi,

Searched Hi and Low for this answer.. but never get it.... If I put a tivo series 2 on a broadband connection... does it require the phone line at all ? I have heard two stories... 1) No 2) Yes because it only downloads guide data via the broadband.. software updates is still via phone calls.

Anyone have a definite answer ?

Thanks much,

Brian

You can happily unplug the phone line once broadband connection is working. You'll get both guide data and s/w upgrades via broadband.

Funny, I've had this setup for a long time, and whenever I try to unplug the phone, it complains. Yet I know that it's using the broadband. I always assumed it got some preliminary data over the phone, and then went online for the rest. Could it be that I have it configured wrong? It seemed simple enough, and it does use the connection...

That's interesting...Mine runs just fine with no phone line connected...Are you sure you have the correct dialing prefix ,#401 ?

I have been researching the Tivo and have been thinking of buying one but the one thing I didn't like was the fact that it had to be connected to a phone line when I have a complete home network it could be connected to from what I could tell. So how would I go about connecting it to my broadband connection?

Element - you can find all the info you need here:

maharg18 - The prefix is correct, which is why I find it so strange. I haven't fiddled with it in a while, but this thread got me thinking. I guess I'll take another look at it and see if I screwed something up.
