35 hours on 80 GB drive?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently had to use my old 80GB "B" drive as my new "A" drive when the 40GB one died. I restored an image unto it and used this command line
restore -s 127 -zi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak / dev/hdc
works great, but on the system screen it only says variable up to 35 hours? Did I do something wrong?

What brand is your "old 80GB" HD? How old is old? I'm betting your "old" drive is a "newish" Maxtor. If it is a Maxtor, you've got a new set of issues. Search for Maxtor unlock, or Maxtor Locked , or something like that. You'll see what I'm talking about. There are MANY threads concerning the drive locking. I'll also bet that if you run MFS tools boot CD/Disk, the disk will show a size of 10 MEG....not GIG....MEG. As of last week, nobody had a fix for it.
I hope for your sake it's another brand.
Just a thought.

Seeing as there's no x in his command line, I don't think there's any reason to panic.
I would think running mfsadd on the drive will get things working.

I wasn't trying to make him panic, but I guess my post reads that way. Just trying to inform him of what MIGHT be the issue. I pulled my hair out for hours until I finally realize the Maxtor just wouldn't unlock. If I'd have kept it out of my TiVo without testing it, I'd have been OK. Apparently, the TiVo itself locks the drive once you install it. There's also "rumor" (?) that the MFS tools boot CD auto-runs punlock which will fubar the Maxtors also. I think I'll go read the thread and see if anyone's made any progress.
Again, not trying to make anyone panic. He's probably got another brand of drive anyway (fingers crossed).

it is a maxtor, it's up and running in my Tivo now, could I still take it out and use mfsadd? btw, the drive showed as being 80 Gigs during my tivo restore process.

GREAT NEWS! "It's up and running in my TiVo now, ...." Wait, you mean you've got it working correctly showing 80+ hrs, or it's just in your TiVo working, but still showing 35 hours???
Mine worked in my TiVo, no problem, but similar to what you're stating the 120 GIG I had installed showed 35 hrs in TiVo, and showed 10 MEG during bootup of the MFS Tools boot disk.
Were you able to pull it and expand, or is that what you're asking me if you can do?
If it's in your TiVo and only showing 35 hrs., it WILL work, but will only allow you 35 hrs of record time; not what you want at all. Since it's in your TiVo, it is locked (well, that's what I've gathered from reading posts about the Maxtor issue....."TiVo will lock hard drives) and there's currently no way of getting the Maxtors to unlock. I may be wrong and blowing things out of proportion, but, again, that's what I gathered from reading. Again, research the issue in this forum, and see if your HD model matches the models that are having problems.
EDIT: After going back and reading your post, it now sounds like you restored an image and didn't expand. You took the 80 from your TiVo and put it in your computer. It showed 80 gig at the time. If it did this, it sounds to me like you're O.K. Just take it out again, and expand it. I think you'll be OK. If it was locked by TiVo, it wouldn't have read 80 gig after removing it from TiVo. Again, try it out. It won't hurt anything.

I think mfsadd will fix your problem as well. If you put it back in your pc as /dev/hdc then boot up mfstools and do mfsadd -x /dev/hdc

sorry for the confusion, it still shows 35 hours. I will try to put it back on my pc and just try mfsadd -x /dev/hdc
btw, what should I put for x? Could I use mfstools 1.1? I guess after this, I have to redo the whole setup and will probably lose my recordings right? The swap made my Tivo noticeably faster I think.

-x is the command line option for eXpand
use version 2.x of mfstools
