which external modems work?

Is there a list somewhere as to which external modems will work with my Series1 TIVO with a bad external modem?

I tried a friend's Sportster 28.8 and that seems to work. But I had to return it so I'm looking for a list of what would work.

Thanks!

I used a USR 56k Sportster slowed down to 9600 and have been making calls for a few days now.

We've tried many, many brands of modems, and had luck with a few, but I'd have to steer you toward USR - almost all of those models worked, and worked better. That's all that we sell at this point.

We did find a bunch of Hayes that worked, but we also found some that didn't. For other brands, more didn't work than did.

Any external serial modem should work. You may need to tweak the modem string for your brand of modem but it's possible. I've personally used USR's and Practical Peripherals.

Yes, any serial should work, but no, they don't all work. At the time when we were going through this initially, it seemed that there were only a handful of possible chipsets inside the modems, and the right few chipsets worked, whatever the brand, and the wrong ones didn't whatever the brand.

Hey weaknees:

I posted this while the site was down, but never got a response.

I followed all of the directions you posted while the site was down. I bought a USR 33.6 sportster exteral. I telnetted into it fine, set the init strings and NV ram registers, then hooked it up to the tivo. Tivo won't recgonize it.

I'm using a 9 to 25 pin adapter at the end of the tivo, could this be the issue? Do I need a null modem adapter or somethign else in there? I'm getting desperate, i've been out of guide data for 2 weeks now =(

I'm interested in knowing what modems didn't work. The needs of the TiVo are very simple (no MNP or other compression/error correction) so I would think that any modem would work as long as it was a working external serial modem. If someone can give me a model that won't work I'm willing to buy (if I can find the model) the modem and try it out.
