Successful Series2 Upgrade - Thanx!
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Zouk
Just completed adding a second 120gb hard drive to my Series2 (originally 60gb) and it's been easy and a total success thanks to Hinsdale, Tiger, Robert S, Jorossian and others. I now have from 84 to 306 hours of recording capacity (Best is my default, and 84 hours should be plenty).
Lessons learned:
Take the time to do the research here on the Forum and read carefully all the advice, including all of Hinsdale's instructions. Jarossian provided a good summary at this thread:

I spent 6-8 hours reading before I even decided to attempt this myself.
Follow the advice of Robert S and (besides making the all-important back-up!) do one drive first, wait a bit to make sure it works, then add your B drive.
I used two Maxtor D540X 120gb 5400rpm drives and didn't need to use qunlock or AMSET. They work fine and are quiet out of the box. With a three year warranty, I feel comfortable with my Lifetime Sub.
Only other mods I did were to hook up the internal fan to 12V for more air transfer and added fans to circulate the air in my entertainment center. Temp has been at 37-39C since installing the first 120gb and expect it to remain about the same.
So, read (and follow) the instructions and advice, take your time and be patient and your upgrade should also go well.
Thanks again to all who've helped with programs and instructions as well as contributed to answering questions on this Forum. It's a great resource and makes self-upgrades possible for everyone.
