Home media option for HDTV box

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I assume that the HDTV box will be capable of mp3 and jpg sharing, correct???

What about sharing HDTV recored shows between two boxes?
Is there enough bandwidth via ethernet to do this?
What about via 802.11b?

You'll need Gigabit Ethernet! ;)

1. I don't see why not. Of course, it will be up to DirecTV for their unit.
2. Ditto.
3. There is enough bandwidth on a 9600bps serial link - it'd just take a long time. In other words, yes, there is enough bandwidth. 10baseT would be too slow for realtime, 100baseT is probably fast enough for realtime. As long as the units have USB2.0, or an integrated Ethernet port, it should be fine.
4. 802.11b isn't fast enough for the bitrates of HDTV - but I believe 802.11g (or 802.11a) are.

You say it will take a long time??
Does that mean that files are transferred from one box to another before viewing?
Does Home Media Option do this? or are files streamed?

Yes the files are copied from one box to the other. You can watch the incoming file as it is being "recorded" to the receiving TiVo if your network is fast enough for "real-time" playback. If not, just as with say Windows media play you will need to allow for a buffer to be built up.

I would agree that 100MB will be fast enough even for HD streams and would suspect that the faster wireless types (G and A) would be too.

HDTV is 26Mbps.

100Mbps Ethernet could stream a 2 hour HDTV movie in 30 minutes if there is no other traffic on the wire. And of course there's no reason not to be able to start streaming it and watching immediately.

Of course unlike the standard definition Series2 DirecTV/TiVos, you'll only be able to stream something from one HD box to another if the first HD box is not busy with 3 streams (buffering/recording 2 channels AND playing 1 back). I can see the error message now:

"TiVo 'Bob's room' wants to play a High Definition program from this TiVo. If you answer 'OK', the current program will stop playing and your place will be saved. [OK, let the 'Bob's room' TiVo watch] [No]"

My hope is that TiVo allows you to transfer SD shows between the HD TiVo and regular TiVos. Obviously, you wouldn't be able to transfer HD shows to the regular TiVo, but it should allow everything else (HD to HD, SD to HD, SD to SD).
