HDVR2 modem appears incompatible with new dialup numbers.

I've been having a problem with my HDVR2 dialing in since I bought it. Today I spent some time experimenting. It appears that the HDVR2 is incompatible with the new dialup numbers (and works fine with the old ones) at least in my area. (516 and 631 area codes)
9 times out of 10 my HDVR2 fails its daily call (or test call) with "handshake failed".
So how did I come to the conclusion it's the new numbers and not my particular HDVR2? Well...
- All of the numbers listed for my area code (631) fail with the error I mentioned.
- The call to retrieve the list of phone numbers for an area code completes every time.
- After trying a number successfully (516)501-4180 I got a message that I was using an old dialup number and needed to change it.
- I changed the number to the new one in the same town (516)962-0332 and the call failed again.
My DSR6000 has no problems with any of these numbers.
So after this I came to the conclusion that the new dialup numbers in my area are incompatible with the HDVR2 while the old ones worked OK. This feels like a modem firmware issue either in the TiVo (likely) or the local POPs (unlikely).
This issue really needs to be resolved.
I am not calling DirecTV to try and resolve this issue.
(I'm posting to the coffee house so this issue gets more exposure.)

Well, I suppose you could get even more exposure by scrawling it it on a bathroom wall. I would think that calling Hughes support would be the first thing to do, as if there's a problem, they'd want to know about it.

Why not? It's their problem, now. I mean, even if TiVo is the one to fix it, DirecTV still has to tell TiVo to fix it.
BTW, I used to have a lot of "handshake failed" on an HDVR2 while the DSR6000 was working fine. The problem went away when I replaced the DSL filter.

Do you think the ,#034 or whatever is was will help the HDVR2 also?

FWIW I was seeking exposure so people more "in the know" would see this. Not in any attempt to blackmail TiVo. The symptoms of the problem make it appear more widespread than one unit. But I couldn’t possibly say that with conviction.
Why not call DTV? An example… My Mom recently had a problem with her TiVo and they sent her a new access card. Just so I'm being clear - that was entirely a waste of time, energy and money to all parties involved and totally irrelevant to her problem. My time is a bit too valuable to be wasted that way. If DTV provided a means to report a possible issue instead of having me fiddle with nonsense for half an hour I'd do it. They also never recognize this as a potential wider problem.
Why not contact Hughes? Same reason.
I actually did try the dialing prefix codes. ,034 and ,019 and it was equally unsuccessful. I've listened to the modem's "conversation" when trying to connect and things sound OK. (to a human ear anyway) Don’t know for certain what the issue is but I certainly did have a few interesting findings.
Anyway - got a PM to check out.

The '#' sign definately has to be there. If you tried ,034 then that wouldn't work.

Sorry Andy - my bad, I goofed in my post. I had the "cheat sheet" in front of me and it the # sign definitely went into the TiVo earlier.
