Airnet VERY SLOW

So I connected Airnet to my HDR312 with no problem - I'm using Tivoweb and updating over Airnet joyously. I'm using an Asante AL1211 card and an Apple Airport hub.
But I'm concerned about my data transfer rates. I'm getting 9-10K/sec from the Tivo, and I regularly get 100K+ from other machines on my network. I'd like to get the Tivo's speeds up to par with my Macs, so data transfer isn't such a chore.
Obviously, adding an external antenna would be a good idea, right? (The Tivo is only 15 feet from the hub, but the case is closed. So to speak.) The Asante card has MMCX connectors. Where can I get a cheap external antenna - heck, even a piece of copper wire that connects to the MMCX connector - to extend the signal outside of the case and thus speed up my transfer rates? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The case being closed makes a big difference. Mine is closed (but not screwed in) so when I need real throughput (for why, I won't say on this forum), I open it up a little.
Still airnet doesn't get as good throuput as I'm sure turbonet would. I max out at around 250kbps (or so).

OK. The mystery deepens.
To experiment with throughput, I took the case entirely off the Tivo and sat it about 8 feet from the Airport hub.
I opened one transfer: 15k/sec.
Then opened another simultaneous transfer: 15k/sec.
Then a THIRD: 15k/sec.
So if I can get three HTTP transfers running at 15k/sec each, why can't I get one at 45k/sec? What the heck is going on?
