Dinner For Five

Anyone ever check out this round-table show on IFC? It's Swinger's Jon Favreau hosting a dinner at some swanky LA restaurant with 4 other independent (or sometimes mainstream) celebs talking about the film business. Most episodes of this series have been really entertaining (they had a marathon on during Thanksgiving). The one with Vince Vaughn, Gary Shandling, and Peter Falk was particularly good.

Unfortunately, I think I've finally seen their first bad episode. This Monday they had on Jennifer Garner, Colin Ferrel, Ben Affleck, and Kevin Smith. It was terrible. Kevin Smith monopolized the entire show! And he has virtually nothing to say. Say what you will about his films (I say they suck), he is from that Kathy Griffin, Howard Stern style of celebrity where they trash other celebrities and the trappings of being famous. It sounds like it would be quite interesting but it comes off like a long rant about a life most of us could care less about. And he's fat and he smokes and he wears dorky glasses and he dresses bad.

I agree. I checked this out after seeing EW mention it in their weekly picks. It was even more sad because Kevin Smith took the floor from Jennifer Garner! I was curious to see what she was like outside of Alias, yet she didn't do more than smile and their stories. Although when she did get a word in between Kevin Smith's stories, she thanked Ben Affleck for not making her audition for the Daredevil role. Ben Affleck might as well have been Vaughn.

I guess I'm glad to hear that Dinner for Five is usually better than the Smith/Affleck/Garner episode. After seeing it pumped here, I'd TiVo'd the episode to see if I liked it, but I just couldn't get into it. I actually like the work of all of the folks in the ep, but Smith did monopolize the conversation. What the heck was the Brit doing on the show with the rest? He didn't seem to fit it. The others all had connections - Affleck in Smith's movies, Garner in Daredevil with Affleck. He just seemed to be the odd man out. Overall, the show had no flow at all and Favreau seemed way overmatched to be host of a show that is designed to attract people who like to talk about themselves.

Maybe I'll give it another shot.

The "Brit" was Irish actor Colin Farrell, who is also in Daredevil.

You really should. It isn't usually themed like this one was and the stars aren't usually so high profile. It's usually much more conversational and breezy and Jon jumps in here and there. I generally like this show a lot. I'll forgive them this one.

Man, I thought that this episode was hilarious, like all the others, though Jennifer Garner was definitely underused.

I liked the episode, and even as a Kevin Smith fan I did think he monopolized the conversation. But he was only doing what he has been for years. Ragging on Ben, if Matt would have been there he would of been a target also.

In the old days, Ben and Matt used to jump on Kevin's message board and bag each other. So that is old hat, except now Ben looks like he starting to get annoyed. I bet his publicist hates Kevin.

Jennifer Garner, overrated. Except I am looking forward to her in Daredevil, but if she whines or looks pouty or overemotes that is when the movie will take a turn for the worse.

They should have used Colin Farrell more, he had some pretty funny stories. But only if they would have subtitled him.

Big mistake inviting Garner and Farrell on this particular episode -- the obvious friendships between Farveau, Affleck & Smith dominated the conversation. Farveau hardly looked at Garner and when Farrell said something they all ignored him.

But Smith's line about Affleck was perfect: "Oh, yeah it must be tough to be you. You wake up in the morning and are like, Ok who am I going to **** today?"

I'll have to agree that Smith and Affleck monopolized the show. BUT it was funny when Affleck was talking about Harvey (i think its Harvey) making him and Matt do all these promos (i.e. farm reports, etc.) and his mimic-ing the threats Harvey was saying.

I for one think Collin will do well in Hollywood (the way he hid his irish accent in Minority Report was great) but in recent interviews I've seen with him ... "He is a cocky a**!"

I really only TiVo'ed it for Jen and she was shut out by the "chatty" actors/directors. I really wanted to hear what she had to say. She was put into the wrong group if you ask me. Oh ... Did you see how many times her hair went up and down?

One last thing ... CAN YOU SAY "CHAIN SMOKERS"? ... And I would never smoke while someone else was still eating either.

this was far from a typical episode of DF5.

Smith was taking center stage no matter who he had to shove out of the way... but that's just his thing.

(plus they shoot for about 2-3 hours and cut down from there)

DF5 is a GREAT show. Of the original 10 eps only the horrific one with Andy "please kill me or help me kill myself soon" Dick and Marylyn Manson was bad.

What killed me was that Favreau and Jen Garner had to endure the clouds of smoke Smith, Afflict and Ferrel pumped out. Smith was chain smoking like a psych patient.

Colin "destined to die young" Ferrel was a hoot! The line about auditioning for Oliver Stone and walking and wondering where the Malaysian hookers and the 8 ball were.... LOL!

Jen got totally overlooked. The only good thing is that I think she got to enjoy the food.

The show is new to me & the first episode I watched was one I TiVod on Sat. w/ Joe Pantoliano, Jeannine Garofalo, David Byrne, and Danny Betters(?).

Joe P. impressed the hell out of me. He ordered a '79 vintage wine for the table and when he tasted it, he was able to discern that it had turned! The man really know his vino. Unlike the episode mentioned previously in this thread, this one was pretty even-handed & everyone got their time. It was lively & enlightening! Needless to say, I set up a SP.

Danny Betters=Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius)

It was a great show and is the norm for the series, I haven't seen the DD one but the only other one I can think of that was really bad was the Marilyn Manson/Andy Dick episode.

Thanks harvscar. I jotted his name down, but couldn't find the paper when I was posting. I figured someone would know. Dave's a great guy BTW.

MM & Andy Dick!? That is frightening! :D
