I have a Sony svr 3000 that I got for Christmas and Its great.
I went and purchased used a Phillips hdr312- 30 hour.
I have a couple of questions. I have gone thourgh set up and it seems to work fine. It has 2.0.1 software. will it upgrade to 3.2 or do I have to subscribe? If I dont subscribe and it goes to 3.2 will it just be a boat anchor or will I still be able to manual record?
What would you do with it and in what steps?
note: I dont think I will subscribe- I like it just for being able to record live tv While my other dvr is recording.
Should I subscribe for a month and let it update or will it do it anyway?
Is it obsolete and it wont update?
BTW- I just have it hooked up to cable with no converter.
Should I unplug the phone line so it wont update?
Thanks for your info, Doug

Only Series2 TiVo's have 3.2
You should subscribe...of course :)

Regardless of what version it upgrades to since it started with 2.0 it WILL become useless if it is not subscribed.
This is clearly stated in all TiVo documentation you must have a subscription or it won't work at all. The only exception is TiVo that shipped with 1.3 or earlier.
So hook it up or don't it makes no difference at all.

The prior post is misleading. A huge portion of 312's shipped with 1.3 or earlier. Any box that shipped with 1.3 originally will continue to allow manual recordings without a sub, even as the software updates all the way to 3.0 (I don't think s1 boxes are updating to 3.2). More importantly, if your S1 box is allowing manual recordings without a sub now in software 2.01, it will definitely still be able to record without a sub when it updates to 3.0. Personally, I'd sub it for a month, make sure it updates cleanly to the latest software. After a month, I'd see if I could live without a sub on it. Personally, when I had 2 SA's, I needed the subscription functionality on both.
