Hello all,

Does anyone have any idea of how to make my unit able to manually record shows without the service? I just want to be able to use the unit like a glorified VCR, without the guide data. When I try to manually record, I get a lockout message saying I must pay for Tivo functionality.

If a box shipped with software version 2.0 or later, service is required. You'd need to sell your box and find an older one to use it without a sub. Before I did that, I'd sub it for a month and see what the Tivo service is all about. After a month, then decide what you wanted to do. Worst case, you're out $12.95. Odds are you'll be sucked in like the rest of us... :D
