what IDE cable do I have?

I'm upgrading a 60 hour Series 2 unit with 2 120 GB HDs. I know that I need an "80 wire ATA 66/100 IDE cable" per Hinsdale's how-to.

I have a ton of these cables from all of the hard drive swapping I've done over the last few years. But how can I tell if what I have is the specified cable above? They aren't labelled in a way that I can tell, but I'm sure the coding on it probably tells the tale.

The 80 wire cable has twice as many wires as the 40 wire cable.

The 80 wire cables generally are stiffer than the 40 wire cables.

The 80 wire cable will generally have a ATA-66 or ATA-100 stamped on it somewhere.

Most of your cables are probably the 40 wire cables. If you have one that looks and feels different, then it is probably an 80 wire cable.

Hmmm. The older cables have thicker ribbing across their width. The newer ones have much thinner ribbing. But I can't say the newer ones are any stiffer.

None of them have ATA-66 or ATA-100 stamped on it.

I did notice that the newer ones have "CA-40ATAS" stamped on the connectors. Is that ATA-40?

Seems like I need to buy a new cable.

The ones with the thinner "ribbing" would be the 80 wire cable. Also, one of the connectors is probably blue.

Yes, the connector for the mother board is blue.

So if it is an 80 wire cable, how do I tell if it ATA-66 or ATA-100? Or are all 80 wire cables ATA-66 and ATA-100?

They will run both 66 and 100.
