Problems With TivoNet Under 3.0

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey all:

I've been having problems with my TivoNet and version 3.0 for awhile now (Phillips S1 Tivo). As soon as my Tivo upgrades to v3.0, I can't connect via TivoNet anymore - ok, fine - enable the ,#401 command, and it'll connect. But it NEVER hangs up! It just sits at the 'Hanging Up' part until I reset the machine, and of course nothing gets updated. If I restore my Tivo back to 2.5 with a static IP, everything works beautifully until 3.0 gets installed again.

Help! Is there anything I can do about this? Is my Tivo having problems because the old TivoNet script had a static IP in it? I've tried to install v3.0 of the TivoNet script, and this is what happens: (booting off of the v3.0 Tivo boot floppy first, btw)

(none) login: root
# mkdir /floppy
# mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
# /floppy/script
found necessary files on //floppy
getting archive utility...
mounting //dev/hdc4 on //mnt and //dev/hdc on //mnt7
EXT2-fs warning: checktime reached, running e2fsck is recommended
fatfs: bogus cluster size
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 16:07.
fatfs: bogus cluster size
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 16:07.
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
Unable to mount partitions -- aborting
umount: //mnt7: not mounted

I've tried the v3.0 TivoNet script both modified and unmodified on multiple floppies, and tried it both ways both running DOS2UNIX beforehand on the script file or not running it... always the same error. The linux boot definately recognizes my drive, tho, and on the right channel.

I'm not a linux guy, but I have no trouble getting around the OS if I'm guided through it. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's been suggested that I try a new TurboNet card with the alternate script (I can't remember who wrote it) - but before I lay down $80, I'd like to know if there's anything else I should try - especially if I have the same problem after another investment.

BTW, I did try a new NIC plugged into the TivoNet board - it's a SMC and it works to connect, but has the same hanging up problem.

P.S. The worst thing is that I can't even connect by modem if I want to - Legs says the modem on this mobo is broken and unrepairable.

I have a standalone Phillips HDR112 that I upgraded years ago with an 80MB second drive and all has worked well (even with the 3.0 software updates) until a month ago when my the motherboard modem stopped working. I purchased the TurboNet a week ago hoping to get Tivo running again but ran into the same problem you have. Even starting from a fresh reset, the network card works well until after it connects and downloads and then it has to hang up. At this point it NEVER hangs up (or in computer speak, it hangs up FOREVER!) Now it seems there are two of us in the same boat and I'm using a recently purchased TurboNet card. SO DON'T BUY IT! That is not the answer. Can anyone help us?

This is definately under 3.0 with a broken onboard modem - I've since reinstalled 2.5 TWICE and every time it works beautifully until the 3.0 upgrade.

Unfortunately I didn't hear back from anyone, so I bought the turbonet card - it arrives tomorrow. Sigh. I'll let y'all know if my experience with it is any different.

I have had the same PROBLEM!
Trying to get Telnet and bash prompt enabled.
I am using Tn30 floppy, and when I try to run the ./script I get:

found necessary files on //floppy
getting archive utility...
mounting //dev/hda4 on //mnt and //dev/hda7 on //mnt7
//dev/hda4: Success
FAT bread failed
FAT bread failed
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
unable to mount partitions -- aborting
umount: //mnt: not mounted
umount: //mnt7: not mounted

HELLLLLLP!

Electric Legs may have a solution for this problem for a good price - it may fix the NIC problem AND fix yer modems to boot... Hopefully he'll post something in here soon, now that I've made him aware of this thread. :)

Up until recently you'd have been looking for a new board or Tivo but this can be fixed now for a little more than a normal modem repair. The repair usually brings back the modem function too. My email's in my profile!

Thanks Legs for giving this problem some attention...

I really don't need the modem capability. I've been happy with TivoNet (and I assume I'll be happy with my new TurboNet card once my unit starts working again) since only occasionally (for test purposes) have I moved the unit into a room with only a phone line connection (a mistake that started this whole nightmare). The network connection is really my desire (especially after shelling out the dough for Tivonet and Turbonet cards). Since this is claimed to be a rare occurence and assuming this issue is understood, is there a remedy to this problem that would involve just removing a diode or chip from the motherboard? I could probably perform that myself instead of repairing the modem functionality which would no doubt take even more time to turnaround (shipping, repair, shipping) and also would continue to drain the pocketbook...

Yours Truly,
Desparate Tivo in da dumps...

There's nothing that can just be"removed" that I know of. Sorry! Fast shipping on the board alone isn't too expensive.
