cant extract virgin image from gz

My single drive done blowed up. I am following the great instructions at the hinsdale site to put a virgin image for my machine, which I downloaded ,onto a new hard drive. Problem is that I am trying to do this on a windows 98/fat32 machine, which cannot handle files over 4 GB. Therefore, when I try to extract the .gz image file, it will fail during the extraction process.

I can boot from the mfstools disk into linux just fine, and can mount all drives, but still the file limitation is there. I am using gzip to try and unzip the file.

Once I have the image unzipped, I dont see a problem using the mfstools to "restore" the image to the new harddrive and get tivoing.

Any suggestions on how to extract that image? or is there a smaller image, I find it hard to believe the image should be over 4 GB?!?! Or am I just doing something stupid? I forget the FTP I got the image from, but it was the version that I wanted for my particular machine.

THANKS!

Something is not right there. Even completely uncompressed, MFS Tools images shouldn't be larger than a gig. Usually they're under 200MB.
