HDD Brackets made to order.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: guydewdney

I have spoken to my tame sheet metal shop, and various hardware suppliers, and I am now in a position to supply IDENTICAL to TiVo's HDD brackets for a tenner INC P&P etc etc (to the UK).

This is based on an initial production run of only 20 - so the more people who 'mail me, the cheaper I can do it.

The only difference is the rubber grommet - mine is black and boring ;)

I assuming I'm sailing close to the wind here WRT advertising - but who else is going to buy them?

PM me or email me...

Posted by: guydewdney

Identical in that all the holes are in the same place etc etc.

I was going to supply phillips / pozidrive (tm) as they are easier to do up ;)

Torx if you want them...

Guy

Posted by: ievjoseph

Thanks for ignoring my crap posting:D

As Torx is already on the first bracket AND I'd rather not have 2 different types of screws involved AND I've got the screwdrivers....*I* would prefer Torx.

Let me know when they are available and you'll get a cheque:D

Thanks again.

Ian

Posted by: guydewdney

wo hoo - millionaire in - ooh a billion orders. ;)

Guy

Posted by: cwaring

Thanks, Guy :) With the almost sub-£100 120Bg drives mentioned in another thead, I may be after one sooner rather than later. That's if I decide to add-to rather than replace the default drive. Haven't decided yet.

EDIT: I'd vote for Standard or Philips rather than Torx :D

Posted by: mrtickle

The 9th tee brackets use Philips screws, so if yours has torx ones it will be better than theirs! :)

Posted by: guydewdney

oooooooh OK then...

Jeez - I have a million phillips screw drivers and one or two torx sets. Why does everyone want torx? Its a bloomin' M3 or somthing silly like that, being screwed into poncy cheap-as-chips mild steel 16 SWG sheet...

You cant use the torque that you can apply with a torx bit or it would strip the thread!

Sorry - engineering rant over with. Ill bite the bullet and supply torx (steel, not stainless ;) ) screws. Bang goes my idea of making a couple of quid from this

Guy

How about the P&P to mainland Europe?

Posted by: ingouk

I would like one. Doesn't matter what screws. :)

ingouk

Posted by: beardsley

Torx, posi, phillips, whatever - put me down for 1 bracket please.

Posted by: Tenex

On the assumption I'll one day connect mine add me to the list - I just happen to have a new and spare 40Gb drive (are 7200rpm HDDs OK for Tivo use?). Any form of screw fitting you'd recommend is OK with me.

Looking at the royal mail website - its going to cost me about three quid extra (inc packing) - so how about 13 quid?

Guy

Lots of people are asking for torx - so I'm doing torx.........

Yes - 7200 rpm disks are OK - but don't bother with 40 gig - get a 120 gig

Posted by: Tenex

The 40 Gb just happens to be sitting on the shelf. Must look at prices of 120 / 5400 drives.

Sounds fair to me.

Posted by: caledvwlch

Count me in for one as well, torx screws are fine by me.

Posted by: emcxh35

Yeah, £13 sounds fine by me.

But according to your profile you are in NW UK... Not europe (cue MrTickle)

Guy

Posted by: Fatbloke

Me too!

PM me with an address for the cheque, mate. :) or can you do Paypal/noChex ?

I'm not bothered what screw fittings.

Posted by: guydewdney

Never got into the whole paypal/nochex thang... Is it worth it?

Guy

Posted by: bradleyem

£13 fine for me.
PM me your address, or bank details for payment.

Posted by: sjg

I'd like one - no preference on screws!

Guy

Not really for this sort of thing - if you accept cheques they won't cost you anything to clear (unless you're a business) whereas Nochex and Paypal will want their fees.

The best alternative is an online bank a/c like eg. Egg and let people pay directly to that (though if you're getting many of the same amount I don't know if they can be tagged to a particular payee). Occasional or odd payments are easy handled though.

Posted by: iankb

I would have thought nearly all of the High Street banks now allow paying directly into bank accounts over the web. Certainly LloydsTSB does. Only having paid in via that method, I don't know what it shows at the other end for reconciliation. Ask KingCurly, since I paid him for my AirNet that way.

Ian.

Posted by: occitan

I'll take one too (to Europe), HSBC seem to want a tenner to do a bank transfer to another bank online, so I think I'd prefer to send a cheque...

I suggested Egg because it's live and updated continuously. Most other a/cs I can access show yesterday's close.

Just checked Egg and there's no additional details so no way of working out who sent what on a repeated sum.

I've just found a reason for sticking with LloydsTSB. Couldn't think of any other reason.

I also have an Egg savings account and on-line BACS transfers with either account are free. Of course, same-day CHAPS costs more like £25.

Ian.

Posted by: Bakdraft

No Issue with Barclays either... i have been able to do it for ages, I think also that nat west is the same

Nooooooo! Yesterday's close only. Very tiresome. Unless they're selling a premium a/c with access?

LOL.....

I'm with LTSB as well - will be pm'ing details to everyone along with address when I've got it sorted - having a bit of a problem sourcing the rubbers in sensible quantities (not 10,000 off.... )

I have been able to transfer money from my HSBC account to another non HSBC account via online internet banking for free.... seems strange that you were told it would cost £10 as that usually applies to normal Bank transfers to cover the the cost of the transfer, where as the internet transfer is the same as you going into a local branch and saying transfer £xx to account XXX sort code XXX.... Dont let the buggers charge you !!!

Posted by: bradleyem

Wonder if you are thinking of a CHAPS transfer - pretty much instantaeous but cost money. A normal BACS transfer takes 3 days and is free with HSBC - I've been using it for ages with no charge.

Posted by: Tenex

CHAPS = £25.

Posted by: radish

Personally I'd use nochex - the fee is minimal, and it's so much easier than bank transfers - primarily the fact that the recipient gets instant email notification of payment, rather than having to check online statements all the time. And don't even get me started with going down the bank to pay in cheques and waiting a week. Nochex all the way, 5 second transaction time :)

Posted by: Tenex

I'd agree Nochex is the best - of a bad set of options.

The cost of a transfer for Nochex is the same whether it's £1 or £10,000. So living with a 99p charge for £1 may seem exorbitant but it's not so grossly unfair as £100 for £10,000. There should be a ceiling on the transfer fees. By way of a real world example I transferred £400 out of Nochex and was charged £4. If it's economical to set the floor at 99p there's no argument for an unlimited 1% for all transactions.

Posted by: xxxx

I always send money by BACS transfer online from NatWest. No fees for anyone and takes 3 days.

Just let me have your bank details.

Posted by: leehal

I have an online bank account and regularly pay people on Ebay by bank transfer - doesn't cost me a penny to do so, it isn't as quick as Nochex though as the receiver takes a few days to see the credit.

Nochex used to be brilliant but they have introduced a £90(ish) limit which I think counts for money held in your account too. By the sounds of it you are gonna have lots of orders......... still only being charged 99p for every £90 or so pound you send to your bank account sounds fine to me - plus you don't have to wait for cheques to clear/go to the bank etc.

Lee

Posted by: Gavin

Title says it all, I'm waiting till the 120gb's are sub £70 (I recon mid summer time for that) then fitting 2 of the beasties to my tivo.

So should I get one now and risk losing it in the mean time or will you be doing them for the forseeable future?

Posted by: Fatbloke

Of course - bank transfer would be much more simplistic.
Smile allow transfers to be set up on the fly, just enter sort code and account number.
I guess on the other end, you'd see the sortcode/acc no of the sending account, so you'd have to pm these details to Guy so he could reconcile payments.
I think I'd prefer that method of payment.

...btw 10,000 rubber grommets! LOL So you dont think you'll get 2500 orders then?? :)

Posted by: brettparker

On LTSB you can put a reference in which appears on the other person's statement. Can only do it online for a standing order not a one off, but if you call them they will set it up for you and you can then do a one off. (can do one offs online but no ref when setting up for some reason!)

Posted by: Tenex

Just been made aware of FASTPAY.

It's backed by Natwest and it seems cheaper than anything else and as it's UK clearing bank backed I've signed up for it. Pretty cheap too they charge 20p to send and no withdrawal fees.

extract:
"FastPay is a quick, secure and easy way to send and receive money from
friends, family or colleagues - they will receive an email or SMS telling
them that they have received FastPay CASH**. Signing up and receiving money is FREE and sending money costs less than a first class stamp. FastPay is brought to you by NatWest. Click here to sign up.

Your FastPay account holds £500, so you can send and receive up to £500 from friends, family and colleagues and you can top up your account from your debit card, credit card, or bank account with up to £100 a day. "

With NatWest you can add a reference to any payment online.

NatWest online banking transfers via BACS are completely free for both parties and you don't need to have a special account or balance. It just goes from your current account. I can't see the point of using Fastpay.

I think that's limited to certain a/cs as I can't do anything "live" with mine and it's only yesterday's balance as I said above.

edit:
OK crossed wires here! I've confused two things: I can manage money through the Natwest a/c but unlike Fastpay I can't use the Natwest a/c to make payments from my NW credit card. That's where the Fastpay system is useful.

rubber grommets found at last - http://www.earsc.com/grommets/grommets.php3?cat_id=4

Luckily I found a supplier in the UK with a few hundred left lying about (at 40p each plus vat plus P&P). Should be here by the end of next week.

I have given up trying ot find metal Top Hat doofers, so I'm using nylon ones - so don't go mental tightening them up ;) these should be here by mid next week.

Fingers crossed I get enough orders to break even (its that close at the moment)

hey ho...

I'll PM / email my address for the cheques / transfers - would it be p*ss taking to ask anyone who abuses their company mail (like I used to ;) ) to include an envelope / stamp if it costs them nothing?

Guy

Then put the price up by a couple of quid. Nobody expects you to do it without a profit. Of course, I'm speaking as one who already has a twin-drive model. :p

Ian.

Posted by: Tenex

Wouldn't it be easier for you to have all orders in the same format?

Just let us know the weight of one of them and it won't be a problem :)

Fastpay ( www.fastpay.com ) is an excellent service for sending money by email. It's run by Natwest, costs the sender 20p per transaction and the receiver nothing!!

Paul

Posted by: guydewdney

i like the fastpay thing - seems quite sensible - acts as another account.

I've signed up to it - so if people can use this it would keep things simple - all you need is any plastic (visa / switch etc) or any UK bank - enter details and off you go.

so - payments to guyATdewdneyDOTcoDOTuk with the ref note being your real name and your handle please.

I'm not asking for money yet as I'm still waiting for all the parts ;)

Guy

Posted by: guydewdney

OK - 24 HDD brackets ordered so far.

That means I break even..

any more for any more?

I have a max production run initially of 40 (I have enough screws and 'top hats' for 250 brackets! - but only enough rubber doofers for 40 brackets)

So - I have an initial production run of 25 brackets being made as I type (the most expensive bit) - but any more orders would be nice -<father ted mode> go-on go-on go-on go-on go-on go-on GO-ON! </FT>

Guy

EDIT:
IMPORTANT - if you have not emailed me - or PM'd me I have not counted your order - please bung one over - it gets very confusing otherwise (getting email from "blah" and wondering if thats the same as "blah123" on here....)

Guy

Posted by: guydewdney

guys - my supplier for the screw has just been on the phone - and it turns out his supplier of the long screws that hold the HDD to the bracket has lied to him - and we can't get them for several weeks, if at all.

He has offered Pozi drive pan head (same shape head, use a pozi or phillips screwdriver instead)

Considering how much you would be un-doing them, will anyone who is ADAMENT about getting torx please re-consider?

Let me know if this will be a problem...

Update - rubber doofers are here. Screws (small ones) due in in two days, spacers due yesterday (! - bloody couriers cant find my house...) brackets themselves to be made on saturday / monday.

Don't need one just yet. Are you planning any more manufacturing runs in the future?

Posted by: alextegg

Guy,

Go on then - I'll have the last one ready for my future upgrade ;)

Posted by: guydewdney

If Mr waring is not having one in this run - then you have the last one.

Carl - can you decide yes or no? - alextegg might have missed out :-/

Im not planning another run just yet - lets get this one done - and if theres enough orders for a second run, then sure - but the rubber doofers are expensive and they have a minimum order.....I need at least 20 second run orders

Posted by: guydewdney

Hokey Dokey!!

My fingers are now bleeding from putting 160 little rubber grommets into sheet metal brackets.

Screws have been picked up.

Tube things have arrived....(well, 'in the post, sir' 'promise they will be there tomorrow, sir')

So I'm ready.

If you can include a 'borrowed from work' posty bag / stamp that would be nice.

For those paying by fastpay (natwest) its guyATdewdneyDOTcoDOTuk - please include full name and address, and number (if more than one)

For those doing the insta-transfer thing - im gonna be awkward - go to lloyds website, look for corn st, bristol - ist code is mine. add ten to the number on my profile for a/c no. (just being semi-paranoid)

Sorry! I am so sorry. I musta missed this post. Yeah, let alextegg have it for now. Can't afford the drive yet!

Posted by: beardsley

One way that another supplier I have used, identified bank payments was to have each amount slightly different.

eg. If 3 people needed to pay £10.00, then they would ask one person to pay £9.99, one to pay £9.99 and the thrird to pay £9.98.

Guy,

Please take this as an indication that I do want the last one, as Carl doesn't. I will send you a cheque and return jiffy bag the next time I am in the office to nab one. Should be by the end of the week. Cheers,

David

Posted by: B33K34

This seems the appropriate place for a refresher on how to use the bracket. I'm going to be adding back my original 40gb drive to the 120gb that's in there at the moment.

My reading of Hinsdale is that this is the right command:

(assumes your existing TiVo A drive is connected as Secondary Master and your new large upgrade B drive is connected to the Primary Slave)

"mfsadd -x /dev/hdc /dev/hdb"

The command i ran to install the 120 included the s -127 command which i believe expanded the swap file

looks like you need to allocate a unique cost per sale (for the next run)... first person on the list gets it for the selling price, 2nd person gets charged an extra penny, 3rd person has to pay tuppence more etc etc etc. the extra pennies wont make much difference to the buyer and it makes it way easier to trace the payments coming in.

hindsight eh? what i'm best at :)

But I suggested that before it became a problem, see above. ;)

Also it would be an incentive scheme early payers pay less. :)

No, hasn't arrived yet. Come to think about it, I walked through Slough sorting office last year. There was hardly anyone about and very little going on. Expect they've made cut backs since then

Right - ho.

Last one paid for.

There has been a small backlog due to a error in Girlfriend's posting ability (she left a pile in her car....) Will nag her today... again....

Guy

Posted by: SteveA

Careful, if she reads this she'll probably post the remaining pile in a bin somewhere!

Posted by: lcsneil

So does that mean you are ready to start on your second batch then Guy?

<FX: runs away and hides>

Neil

yeah yeah. winge winge :D

The last ones got posted today... I have started to talk again to my suppliers - the sheet metal man actually has 19 spares.. but I have no rubber doofers left.

I had one 'order' for ten - but no further comment - and this makes quite a difference!
