DTiVo won't boot: fried modem?

Howdy-
I own two DTiVo's: one hacked with turbonet and an 80gb drive. The other unopened. Last night the unopened DTiVo crapped out on me. We didn't have an electrical storm.

When I power the unit up, it hangs at the "Welcome.... Powering
Up" screen. The screen never flashes and changes to the "Almost there...." screen. My initial guess was that the disk was fried. I called [DirecTV | Sony | TiVo] and one of the jabroni's said that I would have to send it in and get it fixed for about $82. For $82 I can go out and buy a disk twice as large as what is in there and have the unit working in an afternoon.

Before cracking open the broken DTiVo and verifying the dead disk, I wanted to post and ask if anyone has seen a fried modem cause this problem. I noticed that some people said that the boot process checks the modem. I have my sincere doubts that a fried modem will block a boot (recall that I never get past "Welcome... Powering Up"), but am just doing a quick check prior to investing an hour to pop the drive and mount it in my PC.

I am having the same problem. Except mine happened AFTER I restarted TiVoWeb. Anyone have any ideas why? Thanks.

Both a corrupted file system or a dead modem can stop a Dtivo from booting. You can edit the rcsysinit to remove the modem test.

Also, there's a small, flat, white cable from the main board to the power supply. This cable develops connection problems due to it's tinned contacts, and can cause booting/powering-up problems. Unplug this cable at each end, then plug it back in to clean the contacts.
