Who's your all-time favorite SNL host?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I don't watch Saturday Night Live anymore, but I used to love it.
My favorite all-time guest host has to be Alec Baldwin. I think he may have hosted 3 or 4 times, actually. If you haven't seen his "Schwety Balls" skit, you ain't seen SNL at its finest! I highly recommend a KW WL for "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" BALDWIN.
Who's your all-time favorite host?

I'd go with Baldwin, at least in the top 5. The hosts havent been the highlight for me....I'd say The Blues Brothers as the music act, with Garrett Morris doing the intro to Gimme Some Lovin, Jesse Jackson reading Green Eggs and Ham on Update and Paul Simon performing The Boxer after 9/11.
Now how do I create a WL for catching those shows?

Baldwin did a great sketch on SNL where he played a doctor character in a soap opera who completely mispronounced every single medical term he said. He played it so completely straight that it was hilarious.
Still, my favorite host is probably Tom Hanks. Even when he was getting to be a pretty big star and taken as a fairly serious actor, he would completely throw himself into whatever sketch he was doing, no matter how absolutely silly it made him look.
Back in the very early days, I thought Steve Martin was my favorite host. It seemed like he hosted so often that he was very nearly a regular and played some recurring characters (like the "wild and crazy guy!").

Christopher Walkin.
I can't remember the name of the skit, but it's the camera focused on him just being a smooth bachelor.

I think that Walkin skit was "The Continental". Very Funny!
I was thinking Baldwin as well. Besides the skits already mentioned, you can't forget 'canteen boy'!

John Goodman is pretty good, as well. His Linda Tripp impressions kept me watching SNL during an otherwise mediocre stretch of shows.

MORE COWBELL!

Steve Martin. He's probably done it more times than anyone else which means he's done it w/ more casts.

Double ditto!
His "King Tut" song was the absolute pinnacle of SNL. It was all downhill from there. ;)

For this season at least, Ray Liotta was the best of a relatively sorry bunch. His opening was great, and I think we laughed at two or three consecutive skits--which has been very rare in the last 5-10 years.
Here's a different question: who was the biggest surprise as a funny guest host? My vote would be for Garth Brooks, with Al Gore a close second.

Steve Martin no question. Classic!

Biggest surprise for me was John McCain. Very funny.
Posted by: KLB
someone above mentioned Christopher Walken and I'd have to go with him but in general my favorite will be the one that is the last one and the one that finally puts this dog to sleep.

Agreed! McCain wasn't my favorite, but the biggest surprise at how good he was. The "clingy husband," Streisand, Hardball, and Meet the Press segments were all wonderful.

Steve Martin, all the way. :)

The best surprise guest was Senator Paul Simon, who made an appearance when the musician Paul Simon was the actual Guest host. They got into an arguement during the monolouge. It was classic.

Classic!!!
King Tut (King Tut)
Now when he was a young man,
He never thought he’d see
People stand in line to see the boy king.
(King Tut) How’d you get so funky?
(funky Tut) Did you do the monkey?
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut).
(king Tut) Now, if I’d known
they’d line up just to see him,
I’d trade in all my money
And buy me a museum. (king Tut)
Buried with a donkey (funky Tut)
He’s my favorite honkey!
Born in Arizona,
Moved to Babylonia (king Tut)
Dancin’ by the Nile, (Disco Tut)
The ladies love his style, (Boss Tut)
Rockin’ for a mile (Rockin’ Tut)
He ate a crocodile.
He gave his life for tourism.
Golden idol!
He’s an Egyptian
They’re sellin’ you.
Now, when I die,
don’t think I’m a nut,
don’t want no fancy funeral,
Just one like ole king Tut. (king Tut)
He coulda won a Grammy,
Buried in his Jammies,
Born in Arizona, moved to Babylonia,
Born in Arizona, had a condo made of stone-a,
King Tut!

Did anyone catch it a few weeks ago when Robert De Niro was hosting? The opening was classic, with De Niro acting as a CIA agent, holding a press conference discussing Middle Eastern suspects (mocking their names, using words a'la Goodfellas).. very funny, and quite nearly over the line for NBC (I have a copy of this on Windows Media.. if you want it, pm me your email)

Truly great!!!! Hous-bin Farteen! I-bin Farteen!
Alec Baldwin with Pete Schwety's Balls and Schwety Weiners were the absolute best.

He doesn't do it much any more (at all?) but Steve Martin "It's Impossible To Put A Buick In Your Nose, It's Impossible" was my favorite.

Norm Macdonald had by far the best opening monologue. It was about a year after he was fired from the show, and he was asked back to host.
"You know, when the people- when the people here asked me to do the show, you know, I've got to say, I felt kind of weird. You know? I- I don't know if you remember this, but, ah, I used to actually be on this show. You know? Ah, I used to do the, ah "Weekend Update" news routine, you remember that? And ah- yeah, that's where I did the make-believe news jokes. You know? That was me. Right?
So then, a year and a half ago, right, I had, ah, sort of a- a disagreement with the management at, ah, at the NBC. Ah, I wanted to keep my job. Right? And they felt the exact opposite. So- so you see, they like, ah, they fired me because they said that I wasn't funny. You know? Now- now, with most jobs, I coulda had a hell of a lawsuit on my hands for that, but- but see, this is a comedy show. So, they got me. You know…
But, now, this is the weird part, right, it's only a year and a half later, and now, they ask me to host the show. So I wondered, I go, “Hey, wait a second here, heyyyyyyyy!” I go, “How did I go, in a year and a half, from being not funny enough, to be even allowed in the building, to being so funny that I'm now hosting the show? How did I suddenly get so goddamn funny?!”
It was inexplicable to me, because, a year and a half, let's face it, is not enough time for a dude to learn how to be funny! Then it occurred to me, I haven't gotten funnier, the show has gotten really bad! So, yeah, I'm funny compared to, you know, what you'll see later. But…
Okay, so let's recap. The bad news is: I'm still not funny. The good news is: The show blows!

Buck Henry. The pervert uncle skit.

That was definitely a great opening monologue. Right up there with Steve Martin's 'Not Gonna Phone it in Tonight' musical number. That was classic!

What, no love for Tom Hanks? Come on, "Mr. Short-Term Memory"?

Christopher Walken, Jim Carey, Kevin Spacey, Tom Hanks, Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brian.
And Christopher Walken again. And again.

John McCain has been my favorite since I saw his. The husband who invades personal space skit was hilarious and he was really creepy in it.

Jim Carrey in "Jimmy Tango's Fat Busters" is the single funniest piece of SNL sketch comedy of all time.
~Ride the Snake~
The WL I made for it caught it, but they cut out the whole part with the chick ("My hair falls out in clumps, I cry when I see a tree, and I burn strange symbols into my housepets with a curling iron.") They also cut Carrey's "GET OFF!" referring to the spiders and snails.

That's one of the most memorable openings (or was it the monologue?) for me.

I still laugh out loud at Steve Martin's "Holiday Wish" opening monologue:
===================================
If I had one wish that I could wish this holiday season, it would be to have all the children of the world join hands, and sing together in a sprit of harmony and peace.
If I had two wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be for all the children of the world join hands and sing in a spirit of harmony and peace - and the second would be for thirty million dollars a month, to be given to me, tax-free in a Swiss bank account.
Y'know, if I had three wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first - of course - would be to have all the children get together and sing, the second would be for the thirty million every month to me, and the third would be for all-encompassing power over every living being in the entire universe.
And if I had four wishes that I could make this holiday season, the first would be the crap about the kids. The second would be for the thirty million, the third for all the power, and the fourth would be to set aside one month each year to have an extended 31- day orgasm, to be brought about slowly by Rosanna Arquette, and that model Paulina-somebody (I can't think of her name), and of course my lovely wife can come along too - she's behind me 100% on this, I guarantee it.
Wait a minute - maybe that sex thing should be the first wish, so if I could make that the first wish because it could all go "Boom!" tomorrow and then what have you got, y'know?
No, no... the kids singing, that would be great. That would be nice. But wait a minute, who am I kidding? I mean, they're not going to be able to get all those kids together! I mean the logistics of the thing - it's impossible! More trouble than it's worth.
So we reorganize. Here we go: first, the sex thing, we go with that, second the money. NO! We go with the power second, then the money, and then the kids.
Oh wait, oh geez, I forgot about revenge against my enemies! Okay, I need revenge against all my enemies, they should die like pigs in he11. That would be the fourth wish.
And of course, my fifth wish would be for all the children of the world to join hands, and sing in a spirit of harmony and peace.
Thank-you everybody, and Merry Christmas.

My favorite SNL surprise moment was Jesse Jackson reading Dr. Suess 's "Sam I Am".
"Tonight, rather than read from First and Second Samuel, I read from Sam I Am, according to the latter day saint Suess..."
