Star Wars preempted

I just noticed that one of my TiVos was recording, so I went to the buffer to see what it was. Apparently, Star Wars was recording from WGN as a suggestion.

Only it turned out to be an episode of The Lost World instead. I jumped back to the beginning and there was a crawl that stated: "Due to the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster we will not show the movie Star Wars."

I know that Armageddon is scheduled for tonight on FX, and I could see possibly not airing that, because of the images of exploding shuttles, etc. But, Star Wars?

They probably didn't want to pay for the rights unless they're sure they'll have enough viewers to make it worthwhile.

I didn't realize that Armageddon was airing tonight. I was thinking about watching the DVD tonight, because it'd make a nice escapist tie-in to today's events. Even though there's death, it's still an upbeat heroic movie, and for me, that all sort of fits together today.

(And of course tomorrow I absolutely HAVE to watch Groundhog Day. :D )

Well, yeah, there's a problem with showing Star Wars: A New Hope. Do I really need to spell it out? Or remind you what happens at the end, in spoiler space?

Let's just say on a certain day in January many years ago, I found myself looking at a real news event and thinking of how good the ILM guys had done their job making the end of Star Wars look real. :(

Jan,
I well remember the end of A New Hope, but I honestly can't see anyone correlating a fantasy movie with the tragic events of earlier today.

However, as I type this, the 24 hour news outlets are still running the footage from this morning some 12 hours later. And, probably will be for days. That, to me, will have more of an impact than any movie ever could.

Perhaps we could just agree to disagree?

Don't mean to beat up on you, Bob. I'm just trying to see things from the point of view of the guys who have to decide what goes on the air. I can't blame them for wanting to pull the movie and show something else. No matter how feel-good the movie might be, they probably figured we were sick of seeing things blowing up today. I note that ID4 ran a couple of days ago; I would have pulled that, too, if it were my call. Just too many fireworks. :(

Star Wars wouldn't bother me in the slightest. What did kind of make my stomach turn was a preview for "Red Space" on TechTV. It is an episode of their show called Strange Truth (or something like that). Red Space is an episode about the failures of the Russian Space program. "It includes never before seen footage of what went wrong". As it was saying this the background video was rockets and spacecrafts exploding on takeoff and disintegrating mid-flight.
I don't think they should pull it. I was just hoping to not hear/see it again today so I quit watching live TV. So, I got that instead.

For what it's worth, I ended up watching this week's Angel from Now Playing.

Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
A nice cheery show about the sun being put out, that's about right for a day like today.

Hmm...just noticed that PLEX is showing "Apollo 13" tonight....you'd think they'd pre-empt this - especially since burn-up on re-entry was a concern that was expressed in the movie...

disco: Bit of a difference. In Apollo 13 they survived... I think that's the key difference, in fact.

I went to the movie theaters and noticed that "The Guru" is playing. It has several Indian actors, and there was a Shuttle victim from India. I wonder why they didn't pull the movie?

I was flipping around on Sunday evening, and they were playing Aliens instead of Armageddon on TNT... Not sure that Aliens was a much better choice.

I'm sure there are MUCh better reasons to pull The Guru.

Quite true...quite true...but if you follow the reasoning behind pre-empting "Star Wars", you get...wait....I got lost...why'd they pre-empt "Star Wars", again?? ;)

There's also an important lesson in Apollo 13 -- if something goes wrong and you have to fix it, the guys on orbit can only use what they already have with them to fix it. The resources you have are very, very limited. Some people seem to need a reminder about this right now.

The Guru was AWESOME!!! There's no good reason for this movie to be pulled EVER! It's been a while since I've seen a farcical comedy this good. I'm still cracking up every time I think of the Baliwood dance numbers...
