What matters is how the program was originally recorded.

If it was originally recorded on the Pioneer, it's possible to send it to a Series 2 unit on the network and delete it from the Pioneer. You can watch the program on the Series 2. At a later time, you could send it back to the Pioneer and still record it to DVD -- because it was originally recorded using the DVD-compatible encoding scheme.

(At least I think this is correct. I haven't actually tried this yet)
