UPS Question

Hi,

I searched for the UPS threads and didn't find an answer to question. Basically, I am wondering if the UPS has to be always connected to the computer to monitor the UPS usage? I basically want to periodically monitor the usage of the UPS by the TiVo with my laptop about every month, just to satisfy my curiosity. Will this be possible or is that monitoring usage only done if the UPS is constantly connected to a computer?

What he said. You can get a fancier (and much more expensive) UPS that has an ethernet port and SNMP, I think some of those store their own statistics. But the standard serial-port UPS stores nothing, a PC has to continuously poll it to monitor its performance over time.

There has to be a connection of some sort to monitor the UPS but the UPS doesn't need to be monitored in order to work. You can just hook up the laptop when you want to check it.

As you move up in the APC line of UPS systems they have software available that can pull some basic stats such as peak input variance, low input variance, load / draw battery temp things of the sort. You don't have to be connected all the time to monitor the higher end UPS system but they are cost prohibitive for home audio and video applications. A typical 4 KVA model with SNMP2 management MIBs would probably cost you 2 to 3 thousand and the software would be another 300.

If you looking to spend that kind of money then you should really look at Monsterpower. Rumor is that Monster will be producing an SNMP compliant version of thier higher end models later this year or early next year.
