Tivo actually gets a (publiclity) advantage for not offering multiple profiles in one box--first time anything good has ever come of this limitation

(I know, I'm sure there is a "usability" reason . . . sigh).

No surprise. Entertainment Weekly is part of the AOL/Time-Warner conglomerate which has an investment in TiVo. Synergy at work.

I doubt if it is as intentional as you describe . . . I've had a free SI sub for a while and I am shocked about how often ESPN is mentioned in there.
