TurboNET not functioning.

I have a Series 1 Tivo (Sony SVR-2000) and have just installed a Turbonet card an hour ago. The only thing I want to do (for now) is do the daily call via ethernet over my home network. It is a no-go.

I have put in the prefix, and when I try to test the connection, it says (Failed. Couldn't connect).

Is there something that I am not doing that needs to be done? I was under the impression that, for only installing the Turbonet card, and wanting to get the daily call, there was nothing else that I would have to do, besides putting in the prefix.

I have restarted the network, and reset the Tivo. Checked all connections. Green light is on the card. Green light blinks every 10-15 seconds.

Do I have to plug the Tivo in a regular phone jack once more, and reset the calling data?

I tried System reset... to no avail.

Does the Linksys router have to have any special settings to allow this?

Any suggestions? It's probably something stupid I'm forgetting...

Brian

You do need DHCP active on the router - and also you should check the DHCP table in the router to see if the TiVo sought, and was given, an address.

Have you tried a laptop with DHCP from the same jack to see if it could see the internet?

2 things I would check,

1 - make sure the connections are on BEFORE powering up TiVo. DHCP request only comes during the boot process, so if tivo did not get an IP during boot up, it will not get one untill next reboot.

2 - make sure TiVo software is 3.x+ . If not, you MUST run the install script for turbonet. Only in 3.0 they added support for the TurboNet and dial out string out of the box.

weaknees- Laptop works from same connection. DHCP is active on the router and computer. Both my Mac using Optimum Online, and my phone service, Vonage, immediately grab an IP, which is viewable from the Linksys page. No matter how many times I reboot, the Tivo still doesn't get it's own IP.

Hichhiker- Connections were all active before I powered up the TIVO, I even waited longer because I read somewhere that the TurboNET card will not work properly if you don't wait a while after you turn off your Tivo, to turn it back on.
Running 3.0+ software. When I bring up the routing table on the Linksys page, the two IP's, and their respective MAC addresses come up. One for the computer, and the second is for the Vonage.

I've done many things with computers and home networks. For all intents and purposes, this is supposed to... just... WORK!!! I don't understand why the TurboNET card just doesn't grab an IP. Could it be the card from 9th tee itself???

Did you also reboot the router, and then the Tivo? I found I had to do that to get it to work.

Hi,

Double check the dialing prefix - <comma><hash><four><zero><one>

THe next step will be to check the logs.

The easiest way to do that is to burn the nic_install CD (www.silicondust.com) and use nic_install on a PC with the tivo drive attached to dump the log file.

Hello,

The prefix is correct. I don't have access to a PC... all Macs at work (Local High School), and I have 1 Mac at home. Can I check the logs any other way?

Yes, if you have 3.0. Enable backdoors, play any recorded program, then enter CLEAR-ENTER-CLEAR-ThumbsUp on your remote. Then use PageUp/PageDown and the arrows on the remote to navigate the logs.

More details on enabling backdoors, and on using the CLEAR-ENTER-CLEAR codes, can be found here:

Ok, give me a few hours, and I'll report on what I find when I go home and try this. Thank you everyone for being so patient while I find out why something such as this, which should work so easily, doesn't.

Call me crazy, but I think it may be a problem with the router. I had something similar to this happen to me once. Maybe you could try refreshing the DHCP clients table?

Refreshing the DHCP has no effect.
OK - in the log, under "messages", it has a heading of
**NETWORK DEVICE INFO** in a nutshell:
pppd 2.4.1 started by TiVo, uid 0
Couldn't restrict write permission to /dev/cua1:Read only file system
Using interface ppp0
Connect ppp0 <->/dev/cua1
local IP address 192.168.XX.XX
remote IP address 204.176.XX.XX
Terminating on signal 15
Connection Terminated
Connect time 0.8 minutes
Sent 66619 bytes, received 3760 bytes
tcflush failed: invalid arguement
Exit

If I should be looking in another log, please let me know...
BTW- The Local IP address is what I should be seeing on the Linksys routing table page, correct? Is there a way to manually "force" the IP number in regards to the router?

There is a way to force the IP number, but it's a little kludgy. Give all of the other devices on the router static IP addresses, then set up the router's starting DHCP address at the address you want for the TiVo, say 192.168.1.200, and specify only 1 DHCP user. Voila, your TiVo is 192.168.1.200. This may not be practical in your situation. Worked great for me.

I believe I once saw another solution floating around involving changing some config files on the TiVo. Might want to look for it if the first option won't cut it for ya.

I THINK ITS BEEN FIXED...

I powered down the Tivo, opened it, took the TurboNET card out, then Powered up the Tivo without the card. Then, I powered down, put the card back in, and powered it up, and the Linksys router page now "sees" the card, and gave it an IP, and when I tried the daily call, it WORKED!!!

I've been rebooting the unit, but I guess it had to be rebooted once more WITHOUT the card, before it could play nicely WITH the card.

I'm happy!

Brian
