Power/Temp

I just upgraded my TiVo Series 2 (4.0 HMO) to 2 WD 120GB 7200rpm/8mb cache drives, I to was very very worried about heat. Not ready to pull out the tin snips yet, I took another route.

I moved the TiVo to the top of my stack, which is packed as follows:

TiVo Series 2
Sony VCR
Motorola Digital Cable Receiver
Toshiba DVD
Sony Receiver (5.1)
Phillips CD Burner (Normaly Left Off)
Sony 300 Disk Changer (Normlay In Standby Mode)

Before this upgrade, in the same stack config my Series 2 ran about 45-50. After the upgrade I cut a hole in the top of the rack stand, and installed a 115VAC 3500cfm I think it was fan, and the tivo is running about 46 running all day, no problems so far @ all

lap cool

I found a fan called "lap cool" at http://www.1coolpc.com/. It it origional designed for laptops but can be used for Tivo's. It is only $26 and claims to be the best in construction, aluminum case, etc. I originally bought a cheaper version of this which is constructed using plastic. This cheaper version was not work it at all. I am considering getting this better one. Has anyone tried anything like this and how does it compare with other cooling methods. This method requires no modification to the tivo and no work spent on converting the tivo.

Upgraded my Tivo Series II (40 hrs) with a Maxtor 80GB 5400rpm and a 120 GB 7200rpm. Previously the temps were in the upper 30s C(36-38 C) Now it run to 38-41C (stated as normal on my 4.0 software). I did notice during the upgrade that the 80GB was much cooler than the 120Gb to the touch.

I may still swap the 120GB 7200rpm drive for a Samsung but for the time being I am just monitoring.

Cheers

Nick
