You don't understand how WalMart works. They bring in lots of customers and know it. If you want your product in the stores you negotiate for how much shelf space and demo space you get and how much you guarrentee to sell or else you take it back and pay the shelf fees.

It's not my link -- I picked it up from someone else in the forums . So it's not fair to attribute the whole thing to me.

Went down to the local Walmart in Wilkes Barre, PA, and they had one 14 hour unit left. They wanted around $250 for it. The clerk said that the manager had a bunch of the newer 20 hr units, and they weren't moving, so he marked them down to $100 a couple months ago, and they went fast. Don't understand how they can justify selling 20 hr units for $100 and charging $250 for a 14 hour system.

Still looking for a store that has them at $100...

Just negotiate with them. CC will ALWAYS drop their price down. They should go down to at least $250.

Ok I called all the Wal-Mart's within a 25 mile radius of my house and none of them had any 14 hour units. My brother and I went to the store 5 minutes from my house looking for CD cases and there was one on the shelf. Yes I called them first. I asked the clerk to scan it and it would not come up with any price. It did have a 299 price tag on it. He called his manager and she knew nothing about the $99 deal. She called another manager at a different store. Long story short, after waiting for 25 minutes the clerk rang it up for $99 bucks. GREAT DEAL!

JG24,

That is my story exactly, well except for the $99 price. Even after calling another store she wouldn't give it to me at that price. It really makes me mad that they don't even know that they sell TiVos, that the item number and price are not in their system, and that the price range between stores is so large.

Cool

Same thing here. I went to one yesterday and asked the person there if they still had TiVos. Talk about a deer in the headlights! I repeated the word TiVo three times, slower each time. She still didn't have a clue. Then she said "we haven't had those for a long time!"

I walked around for a few seconds and there they were. One 20hr, and two 14hr. Up high next to a bunch of dusty junk, as if they were previously on a lower shelf and they just put them up high to get them out of the way. I had another person check and they were still scanning at $299 and $249. And they wouldn't budge on price! (Morons!) I would have bought all three and taken care of her "TiVo problem!"

So now they'll sit on a shelf for another two years, collecting dust, because the hired help doesn't even know they exist except that they have to keep moving these heavy boxes!

Right now Wal-Mart is in their inventory cycle. All the merchandise is counted for various reasons, tax, loss, etc. It is common practice for marked down items to have regular price shelf tags during inventory. This is usually done to lower the "shrinkage" of a store. Shrinkage is a loss due to theft or some other reason. Store viability and managment competency are rated by this figure. No new markdowns are taken close to inventory. If the store's numbers are good, there will be a cycle of deep markdowns. Each department is usually given a figure of money that they can use to markdown merchandise. It is usually up to the person doing the markdowns as to how much is taken off of a price. Sometimes markdowns come directly from corporate HQ. The markdown rates vary greatly between stores. Stores that are high grossing usually get more markdowns than those that might not be as busy.

Wow,

I never thought my post would get this many responses. I was only trying to pass on a deal I stumbled upon.
Anyway, someone asked me to send a copy of my receipt so their local store manager might honor the price I got.
Just e-mail me and I can send a scan about 50k.

p.s. Can anyone provide tips for backing up a virgin
TIVO from my original post.

Good Luck

Mike

On that same note I can send a scan of my $199 receipt for the SVR-2000, CC open box.

Someone else has been trying to pricematch with the receipt with no luck so far, but maybe it'll work for you.

How about posting when the deep markdowns occur. I bet all stores are on that inventory deal now. My Quincy, IL superwalmart has re-arranged all the electronic shelves and has left-overs in about 10 shopping carts including a 112($249) and 212($269) as of 6-10. I grabbed the 112, scanned it myself, and then rolled it up front to customer service yesterday. I told them 112's were obsolete and other walmarts were selling for $100 according to internet. Alas, she said "we don't match other walmarts".
I'll probably go in every other day to see if it shows up marked down.

tivo.com today is listing the 14 hour models at $199. Pretty sad when you can get it cheaper from them than you can from your local $DISCOUNT_STORE.

I went to a Walmart in Marietta Ga. today. Not only were the Tivos in the clearance section but many of the TVs, VCR and WEb TV units were also Phillips.

Walmart here (Wisconsin) has 14hr unit $200. Tried to follow the layaway advice but " $200 price is already Clearance and clearance items can not be put on lawaway.

I'm in the polling mode now waiting for the price reduction

I got two 14 hour units (for $200) at Sam's club a long time ago (one before Christmas). Our Sam's club marked the last one down to 160, then there were none.

Our walmart has only on 14 hour unit, and it was $250 last I checked.

I need to check other stores, but it doesn't look like they are going back to the $100 price for the 20 hour units like they had a couple months ago.

Guess I missed out.

The Wal-Mart Customer Satisfaction Experience

START TIME: 10:10am

Wal-mart #1: Got ahold of electronics quickly. Long hold while they searched for it. They had an "RCA" TiVo on the very top shelf. just discounted to $259. Was $269 earlier. 20 hour. It was "Philips", she said when asked again about the brand.

Wal-mart #2: Nobody at this store was in a rush to answer the main phone, but they ESPECIALLY didn't have any desire to pick up the phone in electronics. The operator paged someone. Later, the operator got back on the phone and asked if someone had picked up yet. After a while, the operator got back on again and asked if they answered. Operator came back on again... "Did he answer?" No. Finally! He picked up. "Electronics." I asked him his name. "Phil", he unhappily responded. They have TiVos. Philips. 20 hour. $259. "On clearance." At least he knew his product. I asked him to scan to make sure. He put me on hold. Then "Tim" answered the phone. I told him I was talking to Phil. He said he was sorry and forwarded me back to electronics. "Hello?" It was Phil again. He said they were the same price as he quoted and it was the clearance price. He had three of them. I said thanks. He slammed the receiver down. Store #894 in case anyone at Wal-Mart cares to chastise these masters of customer service.

Wal-Mart Super Center #1: Line busy for ten minutes. Called the automotive number to get them to transfer me to electronics. They don't have them. Ever caried them? "No. Hold on and I'll go check." [Isn't that a strange answer?] I told her they would be near the WebTVs. She got back on the phone in less than a minute (a new record?) and said she didn't have any.

Wal-Mart Super Center #2: Line busy for two minutes. One minute of ringing for the operator to pick up the phone. Nobody answering the phone. Rang back to the operator. Rang back to electronics. Rang back to the operator. Rang back to electronics. Finally! Betty went to go check to see if they had any. Quickly checked. Have 2 of them. She didn't check model/price. Put on hold. 20 hours Philips. $259. Clearance price. Was $299.88. She was polite and helpful.

Wal-Mart Super Center #3: Wasn't busy! Operator forwarded me to electronics. Anita. Asked her if she had any TiVos. "Tivos??!?" I told her they would be near the WebTVs. She went to check. $249.98. Went to go back and check the brand, number of hours. Two left. 20 hours. Not on clearance yet. New models are coming in, but doesn't know when.

FINISH TIME: 11:01am

Nobody needs to remind me NEVER to call Wal-Mart for ANY information. But at least I think I know which one I want to shop at for electronics (the one in the poorest section of town).

Someone could try MikeB2's receipt at Sears. Sears has a price matching policy.
