Tivo sluggish

Does anyone else have a problem with a sluggush Tivo? At first I thought it was the batteries in the remote, so I changed them. Sad to say, that wasn't the problem. I hit a button on the remote, and it takes about 4-5 seconds for the Tivo to respond. Sometimes I actually have to hold the button down for several seconds to get it to respond. The other odd thing is that my Tivo's red light doesn't come on anymore when it is recording. I have a series 2 that I got in December 2002. Any ideas?

The red light is simply fixed by restarting the TiVo. A sluggish box is also something that can be fixed by restarting or could be a sign of a failing HD.

Try the restart and report back.

Myself and others have reported here in the past about having their Tivo suddenly become nearly unresponsive to remote commands. All manner of fixes have been suggested (rebooting, changing the IR code, etc.), but none really seem to fix the problem consistently. The "solution" is to do nothing - the problem seems to resolve itself in a few days.

I've restarted the Tivo, but it didn't really help. The controls are still acting funny. Sometimes the buttons on the remote work the first time, sometimes you have to hit them several times before it takes. I'm 99% sure it's not the remote, because the buttons for the TV work fine. I hope Tivo just has a cold, and isn't going to die from pneumonia. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my remote. I think we both have defective ones. or if you have yours for a long time, you're wearing out all the buttons.

I guess I'll have to give a new remote a try. It's worth trying. It's definitely cheaper than a new Tivo.

This just started happening to my Tivo, I thought maybe it was because I installed the wireless usb adapter, so I unhooked that and it is still doing it. I restarted it and it works for about the first 5 clicks, then takes ages to respond again.
This Tivo is just 7 months old a 40 hour series 2, as it's my 2nd Tivo, my first 80 our series 2 is over a year old and not experiencing any problems at all.

Does anyone know what else to try?
or what else could be causing this?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I don't know the answer here but I'll bet the TiVo is doing some sort of maintenance and I further guess that it's defragging the hard drive.

Of course, I've only been a TiVo user for 3 weeks but I have been in computers since the Apple II.

I do not believe defraging is necessary on a Linux based system, according to information I have seen posted here.
