swirching from standalone to DTV receiver

Quick questions guys:

I currently have DirecTV and use a stand-alone TIVO. My friend has offered to sell me her DTV Tivo and I was thinking of switching.

Am I able to simply hook up the DTV receiver/Tivo myself or do I need help? Is my DirectTV set-up ready for TV or does something need to be done?

Am I right in thinking that with the DirectTV Tivo I can pay only $5 a month for Tivo service instead of the $12 I pay Tivo now?

Who do I call to switch my account to a new box?

Thanks in advance.

The DTV TiVo will need to have 2 lines from the satellite dish to the DTV TiVo. I'm guessing you only have one going to the TV area now.

I'd try calling 1800DIRECTV to swirch your account to a new box.

Note that the DirecTiVo will only need two lines from the Satellie to the receiver if you want to use the dual tuner functionality of the DirecTiVo. You don't NEED two lines, but I would highly recommend that you get a second line installed when you get a chance.

The DirecTiVos sell for $99 at Best Buy and Circuit City.

I recentlly replaced a regular DirecTV receiver with my second DirecTiVo. I just have one line running to it for now. I have to get motiviated to climb under the house and runa second line to the bed room.

And yes the fee charged by DirecTV for the DVR (TiVo) Service is only $5. You don't pay anything to TiVo directlly.

All I did was disconnect my standard DTV receiver and connect the DTivo in it's place. I then called DTV to deactivate the old receiver, activate the DTivo and activate the DVR service.

One difference you will notice that seems to confuse people quite often is that it will take a few days to get all the guide data (unless your friend keep it connected until you pick it up). DTivo's get their guide data from the satellite, not from a phone call. Until you have full guide data your season passes and wishlists may not work properly.

I second the "all but need" for running a second line. Having a second tuner available is a 300% improvement!

Why does she want to sell her Directv? You can get good deals as a new subscriber to Directv. Maybe you should look around.

Four TiVos now, all with single Samsung drives:
Humax DRT800 w/DVD-R (174hrs)
Two older Series 2's (142hrs and 157hrs),and a newer nightlight
Series 2, a stupid case design IMO (174hrs)
All but the last are lifetimed. TiVite since 2000. There is a Good IR solution.

Got Vonage 4/9/03--need a referral credit?

I recently took my DTivo down to one tuner so I could use the second line for a Comcast HD box. Even during the Summer only having one tuner is a PITA. I'm probably going to have to run a third line so I can get dual tuner again.
