HD TiVo w/o Activation

I recently purchased an HR10-250 and am waiting until I move into my new house and get my HD TV delivered to activate.

However, I would like to test the antenna I have before I move. Before I open the box, can I simply attach the antenna without activating the receiver through DirecTV and paying the $5/mo? All I really want to see is the OTA strength w/ the antenna.

Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure you can do that. You just won't have access to any "TiVo" features beyond the live buffer.

If you are getting DirecTV when you move anyway, there's no reason not to give it a shot.

Then again, unless you are only moving across the street, how well your OTA antenna works at your old house may not be that predictive of how well it will work at your new house. Geography can have a major impact on reception even between fairly close locations.

I am moving about 1.5 miles away, closer to the towers and I am guessing substantially the same elevation. I just want an idea of what kind of OTA setup I need.
