Talking Pace PVR on Technofile

They had a prototype in the studio. Hardly mentioned it's recording ability, the item mostly concentrated on it's Dreamcast feature.

Sky claim the price will be below the cost of the component parts and at least a year away.

A look inside revealed a very cramped box.

Hmm, when TiVo launched six months ago, the Pace PVR was supposed to be a matter of months from launch, now is it 'at least a year away'? For all this talk of rival PVR's coming and with some analysts predicting that TiVo will be 'nothing special' when the world is awash with PVR's from every manufacturer, it's perhaps surprising that TiVo have had an offering out there for two years now (six months for UK)... Perhaps creating your own isn't as easy as it looks

Neil.

Question

What is even more strange is that they feel the need to promote it as a games machine. Possibly more than a PVR. They were demonstrating using the menu's with a gamepad. Not many people will understand the concept of only playing games you have to download to the box via the satellite.

TiVo's similar combo unit in the US (Direct TV with TiVo) also looks pretty cramped:

Yeah, for some reason they don't seem to think a PVR is enough of a 'killer-app' in itself. Many people I know would love a PVR (even if they don't realise it yet! ) but would have no particular interest in playing games on it (even if they were of Dreamcast quality...)

It just goes to show that you shouldn't hang around waiting for the next version of something. There will always be something better coming along at some point in the future - usually much later than expected.

Alot of the 'scuttlebut'suggests that the Pace PVR is ready to roll but that Sky have got cold feet due to pressure from advertisers threatening to pull out of investment.
We shall see!

I think you will find making a PVR at a reasonable cost to the end user is very difficult to do. (even Richard Grey wouldn't be able to do it!!!)

I have a friend who worked for a Japanese company who was developing a PVR (running Windows CE I think so they could stay processor independant) but that was cancelled due to company downsizing and ability to get it to work at the right price. Moved to another UK company working on the same technology but again on hold till can get price down and offer more than just a VCR. I think that the program guide data stuff and organisation of said data to PVR is far harder than all these companies realised.

Oh he also has a TiVo and loves it.
