I want to buy a Stand-Alone Tivo

I am interested in buying a stand-alone tivo and was wondering if anyone out there could help me. Here are two questions I have:

-Should I buy a 20 hour Tivo and then upgrade myself or splurge and buy a 30 or 60 hour one?
-I've looked at a lot of places and can't seem to find many tivos for sale. Where is the best place to find one?

Thanks.

If you don't mind voiding the warranty and doing the upgrade, then by all means buy the cheapest TiVo you can and upgrade it yourself. Not sure about the best place to buy a TiVo. Good Luck!

If you don't mind a refurbished unit, you should check out ubid.com. They have the very basic Philips TiVo (HDR112). You need to bid on it. If you are lucky you might get a low price for it. Once you get it go ahead and upgrade it. Good Luck.

ebone,

I got my Philips 20hr at Walmart in November for $149 *discontinued *. They are usually not displayed prominately and you have to look under the CD/DVD cases. That's where I found mine. The last one.

We plan to upgrade after the 90 day warranty. After two weeks of TiVo, we are feeling the pains of low storage and can't wait to upgrade. Luckily, basic quality is fine for most of our needs so we're able to sqweak a few extra hours out.

Good luck.

I've been waiting paitently for a TiVo I could afford from months. I finally was rewarded Saturday. I was in Wal-Mart searching for a birthday present for a friend's child when I stumbled over to the electronics department just to see if they had any TiVos.

I found one brand-new, unopened Phillips 20 hour on the top shelf marked down to $99!!

I was so exicted I ran across the store to find my wife with the buggy so I could go get the unit before someone else could grab it.

Be patient and keep checking around. It will pay off!!

I got a refurbished Philips HDR112 from ubid.com (hasn't arrived yet, it's been in their warehouse for 4 days now. Kinda nullifies the overnight shipping doesn't it..) I paid $129 + shipping for mine. I definitely think it's a better deal than paying $299 for the new units, especially since I plan on upgrading it.

Bone,

I bought the AT&T TiVo for $299 due to the fact that it has more RAM (32 vs 16 MB RAM) installed in the unit, appears to have a faster processor, and comes stock with 40 hours basic recording time. As soon as they get the upgrades for this unit figured out and documented, I'll be out of my 90-day warranty period and ready to go.

My $0.02...

I am selling a 30 hour Phillips with Lifetime Service for $400. It has been a great unit. Never any problems with it. I got Directivo for Christmas. I have all the cables, original box, manual and remote. If you are interested you can PM me. It is listed in the Classified Ads on the forum.

OK got my refurbished Philips HDR112 from ubid.com. I am so far extremely happy with it, the packaging was like new, the Tivo is working just fine. I am planning on adding a 80GB HD soon, the 8 hours of medium quality recording time is just not enough for me.

Thumbs up

Circuit City's website claims to have inventory on the 30-hour standalone by mail order again. For Knoxville it lists availability at both outlets, which were out-of-stock last month.
