silly skipback functionality

Okay, so the skipback functionality (by that, I mean how when you're fast forwarding and hit play, tivo jumps back a bit to take your reaction time into account) is okay a lot of the time, but sometimes I just want to fast forward a little bit. Way too often, when I hit play Tivo skips back so much that I'm in a position BEFORE when I actually started fast forwarding! Would it be too much to ask for Tivo to put a threshold on the skipback time so that it doesn't jump back after I just fast forwarded a little bit? Is this something fixed in the 2.5 software? I've got a Tivo2 so I'm stuck with 2.0.

Why not just use a fast forward speed of only 1 (out of 3) when you only want to ff a little bit? I believe that this speed does not do any overshoot correction.

I don't think they did anything different in 2.5.... I feel like I'm constantly fighting it. Although the wife & I do exchange high-fives when we come out of a commercial break "dead on!" I wish there was a way to modify the skip-back deal.

Yes, the weird anomoly where you can hit fastforward, then play, and find yourself behind where you were, was fixed in 2.5. At most, the skip back will take you right back to where you were.

With 2.5 you can also turn your Forward to End button into a skip forward 30 seconds button using the backdoor codes referenced above.

After entering FF, you can hit pause instead of play, then pause again. Overshoot Correction is not applied in this case

It's good to hear that this is kind-of fixed in 2.5, except I think there shouldn't be any skipback at all instead of just ending up back where you started.

Even the slowest fast forward speed has some skipback, doesn't it? Am I the only one who never uses the slowest fast forward speed because it seems too slow to be worth it?

I totally agree with these sentiments. Have we ever heard WHY the correction was changed to be so dramatic? There's usually a very good reason for these types of changes and often it's not obvious to me because I was not suffering the problem which caused the change to be made . . .

Auto-correction (Skipback) is one of the selling points I use for TiVo. Otherwise, you see your show and go "oh sh**" and have to rewind, then fast forward, then play. Way too time intensive.

If you are unhappy with the default Auto-correction (as many of us are), change it!

WARNING!

If you blow up your TiVo or your house, home theater equipment, etc. with these instructions, it's not my fault. These are unsupported BACKDOOR instructions which modify your TiVo in what could be considered unpredictable ways.

Due to the graphic nature of these instructions, viewer discretion is advised.

TiVo 3.0 Autocorrect Adjustment

01) Press the TiVo button to go to TiVo Central.
02) Pick Programs to Record
03) Pick Search by Title
04) Pick All Programs
05) Enter "3_0_BC". Do not use quotes, and replace the underscore marks with spaces.
06) Press Thumbs Up.
You should hear 5 bells and see the words "Backdoors Enabled!".
07) Pick Programs to Record
08) Pick Search by Title
09) Pick All Programs
10) Press Enter-Enter-Rewind. The red recording light will come on.
11) Enter 1000 and then press Enter-Enter-Rewind again. The red recording light will go off.

If you hit pause while in FF or REW, there is no skipback.

FF/REW
PAUSE
PLAY

The single speed FF/REW has no adjustment, just 2x or 3x.

Actually, if you turn closed captioning on, the slowest fast forward speed is very useful. All the CCs are decoded and displayed, allowing you to really zip through programs that aren't super 'interesting', but you'd still like to know what's being said.

Actually, i use it for some sports, like soccer. It makes the game rather interesting at that speed. What's funny is when you come out of that mode the game seems rather slow (no wise cracks from the peanut gallery!)

feldon23: I meant that I wish there was no skipback if I've fast forwarded for something like 3 seconds. I didn't mean I don't like skipback at all. If you just fast forward for 3 seconds, skipback is counterproductive because you end up before where you were when you started. This seems like a bug that should have been pretty easy to detect and fix before 1.0, let alone 2.5.

If your TV can keep up. On my two sets, both seem to periodically drop some captions, presumably because they're coming in faster than they can display them and they're experiencing a buffer overflow.

If you're only going forward a few seconds, best to use 1x. There is NO autocorrect on 1x (which is triple speed), and you could advance those 3 seconds in one. at 2x (twenty times normal), you'd be talking about a total time to hit FF/FF/Play of .15 seconds. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty quick on the draw, I ain't THAT quick.

I do understand your general complaint however. One side of it has been resolved in 2.5. The autocorrect will now never send you back to before where you started. If the AC WOULD send you back there, it just drops you at your starting point.

The other side, wanting it selectively disabled, is problematic. There has to be a hard and fast line where it does work/doesn't work. How do you decide? And worse still, how do you explain the unit's inconsistent behavior to nontechnical users? I personally think they made the right call having it be on all the time, but like you, sometimes get bitten and wind up where I started.

If you want the autocorrect entirely disabled, follow the directions above and enter 0 for both values. Your Tivo will now behave exacly like a VCR, playing from where it was when it received the play signal. If you just want less autocorrect, play with the settings (I personally use 925/750 and it works well for me).

If you don't want the auto-correction, then Fast Forward to where you want, and then hit Pause twice.

The more you use skipback the better you should get at timing it just right. As Geko mentioned, if you only want a few seconds just use the first FF speed, which has no skipback.

That's true. It widely varies as to the show, in my experience as well. ST:TNG on TNN has almost 100% rock-solid captioning, whereas PTI on ESPN misses whole sentences (even at normal speed).

Speaking of CC, does anyone have the URL or know what the timeframe is for phasing-in CC by law to new and old programming?
