This has got two updates (I'm gonna reversion to 1.01 shortly), one for creating a trace file with the -t option, and two, it's got what I think should fix your problem with deleting emails. When I deleted the email, I forgot to clear the server response. If this doesn't work, try sending me the tracefile that the script creates. (Oh, almost forgot, if you "touch /var/hack/bin/tpod.conf", the script will exit on the next loop. This is so you don't have to kill the thread, which may result in a hanged Tivo [Dont' forget to "rm /var/hack/bin/tpopd.conf" if you want to start it again)

*Attachment removed, see end of thread, or http://www.networkhackers.com/tpop *

dpop

it is deleting messages now... WOW you are good.

I did send a few tests... as the test messages I'm sending from my Outlook 2000 client, are missing the BODY of the message everything else is fine.

I've forwarded a few larger SPAM messages to see what comes through.

keep up the GREAT work!

When fixing the problem with matching case-insensitive text, I accidentally reversed the logic, so I was getting the opposite of what I needed... I've refixed the problem, and I'm getting bodies of email again. I think this is it...

FIXEd!

everything is working perfectly ...

messages are getting deleted on the POP3 server, as selected. And the BODY of the messages are now being displayed.

Fantastic job...

Any chance we can set up recording via email with this?

Something simple like...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: Tivo@mydomain.com
From: me@onvacation.org
Subject: Keyword Wishlist

Shrek
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if I learn while on vacation that a program is on (in this case the movie Shrek) that I want to record I could send an email from someone's house, my cell phone, or my pager to set up a new recording...

sounds possible in theory ... you would need to have a program that is parsing the messages recieved, and then act opon them.

sounds like a PC client that formats the messages in a way that can be identified on reciept. perhaps creating an XML like output in the body of the message. Triggered by a subject "TiVo Schecduled Recording" or some such thing ...

I guess the biggest down side would be having to put security in, afterall if you gave your tivo's email address out, anybody could schedule recordings!

If you can load the tpop daemon, why not just use tivoweb?

I would love to be able to schedule a manual recording by sending an e-mail from my 2-way pager. Wish I knew enough to write the code!

tpop problm

I setup my config file and put in the ipaddress as suggested. then when I went to run it I get this message.

bash-2.02# ./tpopd.tcl
bash-2.02# couldn't open socket: connection refused
while executing
"socket $server $port"
(procedure "check_mail" line 8)
invoked from within
"check_mail"
(file "./tpopd.tcl" line 548)

I am using version 3 of the tivo software. I downloaded it off of your web page because it sounds like that is kept up the most.

Ok on UK TiVo - Suggestions

I don't know whether anybody else has confirmed this but this program works great on my UK SA TiVo with 2.5.5. Its way cool!!

A couple of suggestions though...

1) Would it be possible to use the familiar newtxt2osd program (also in \var\hack\bin) to display a message "You have new mail" with customised x-y and colour options. If this happened it would also be cool to allow a feature that only informs you every x eMails received if you've not acknowledged it, so that you don't it coming up every time it polls etc.

2) I have delete turned off because I want to collect from my Outlook, but what would be cool would for it be delete eMails from the POP3 server if you deleted them from the TiVo. So if it was a small eMail and I was to action it straight away I could delete the eMail, and therefore my Outlook would not collect it later. But on the next poll it would download everything on the POP3 again, so if I picked stuff up from Outlook then it won't appear on TiVo! This would kinda replicate IMAP functionality in some ways.

Make sure your tpop.conf file is in /var/hack/bin - that's where it's looking for it.

I'm getting every message twice. It is deleting them off of the server, but it only seems to do so after picking up the messages the second time.

Would it be possible to have tpop mark the messages as READ instead of deleting them, and skipping those messages during subsequent polls? Maybe it's time I learned tcl.

The error is because the "trace" variable isn't called out as a global for the display_options proc.

Add 'trace' (without the quotes) to the end of the line that begins with "global" (around line 253) and it should work.

It should look like this:
global argc argv configfile server user password port interval delete trace

BTW, it's not the delete variable you're setting, it's the display options variable. Delete is -D, display is -d.

Hey guys, sorry I've been gone so long. I've got three things I'm gonna try and add in the next week or two.
1. Interfacing newtxt2osd
2. using the UIDL command for message IDs (which should fix your problem Mars Rocket) and possibly add some options for message handling. I should note that there is no such thing as marking messages READ in POP (see http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1939.txt ), but if you don't have delete set to true, tpopd currently tries to keep a list of messages that it has downloaded, offering, in effect, a way to keep track of read messages.
3. Support for the APOP command (again, see the link above). This allows for MD5 password encryption instead of using clear text.
