Tivo vs. Replay TV

I hadn't looked at the Replay TV for a while but one of my buddies forwarded me a spec sheet this morning. All I can say is WOW. Is Tivo just waiting to see if Replay TV gets busted or not to adopt the same features? I mean really... being able to forward shows, ethernet built in so that you can access all of the units in the house (We have 3 Tivo's here... boy would that be nice) commercial skip... it rocks.

What has the prevailing opinion about this been here on the boards? Can someone point me to a discussion about this stuff or is it being ignored since this is an 'officalish' Tivo board?

We don't ignore ReplayTV, but we occasionally yawn. If you want to discuss it, you first need to identify the model. They often promise a lot and deliver something else.

As for the "Ethernet" connectivity, did the ad happen to mention the speed at which it operates? That is, how long would it take to transfer a one-hour program to another unit?

And yes, those features have been discussed here. Do a search for ReplayTV vs TiVo. Or read the ReplayTV forum.

You will find that most TiVo owners are unimpressed by ReplayTV, especially their user interface.

Very cool, this is the kind of imformation I am looking for. I find myself in a situation that I am am sure many of you also find yourself in: I live in a household with 3 Tivos but no easy way to watch any of them except my own. I am crossing my fingers that Tivo will offer up something new soon to help all of us out :-)

SONICblue ReplayTV just came out with the New 5K series. All units come with a $50.00usd rebate
$250 lifetime or 9.95/mo subscription fee.

5040-----$249.99 w/rebate
5080 -----$349.99w/rebate
5160------$549.99w/rebate

Outputs:

RF/ANT for cable
S-Video
line one (2 audio RCA; 1 composite video RCA)
line two (2 audio RCA; 1 composite video RCA)
Progressive output (Y Pb Pr)
Digital Audio Output (Optical)

Inputs:
RF/ANT
line one (2 audio RCA; 1 composite video RCA)
line two (2 audio RCA; 1 composite video RCA, 1 S video)
Infrared Blaster Port
Serial Port
Ethernet Port
Phone Jack
USB 1.1

Encoding
MPEG2 as found in DVD players

The 5000s have component out, instead of the VGA port. It supports YPbPr. The progressive video output on the 5000 is definitely better than the 4000s/4500s.
-As you know it has the USB port.
-It also has link lights next to the Ethernet jack (finally).
-The front panel has been cleaned up. There's the power button, and the power and record light.
For the most part the hardware is the same externally. There have been some internal changes.

-Redesigned remote that fits in the hand better. The input button has been removed, and it's now a setup menu item. A few other buttons have been removed to make the remote smaller. But, the main ones are all there. It will control your TV and the RTV. Will not control your DVD, etc like the original remote, but has a much longer list of supported TVs than the 400/4500 remote.

-The UI hasn't changed much. It's 99.9% the same.

You're getting an improved product for less.

Do you mean over the Internet, or local sharing within a house?

I thought that you could watch a show live on one Replay that is really streaming from the other Replay in the same house.

I'm still amazed that this networking isn't allowing them to act as N tuners though.. That is the 'killer app' for me, and would be what is necessary to make me pay FAR less attention to the actual network schedules, since a lot of the shows I like conflict (including necessary padding on some shows -- e.g. CSI & 'er' conflict since I have to start 'er' 2 mins early.)
