I don't even know where to start

I've owned TiVo for a few years now and have just purchased two series 2 units. I plan on setting them up this weekend so they are still in the box. I've noticed that some postings seem to imply that you are able to use the network to download your guide info even though Tivo claims this functionality isn't due until April.

I work in the computer industry and I have a Linux server I've set up in my home. I'm probably a novice where Linux is concerned but I haven't been totally clueless when reading your posts .

Ok, so here are my questions (please get ready to be really patient...)

1) Is there network functionality that I can tap in to without having to wait for Tivo to release their Home Media whatever?

2) I didn't see anything which discusses how these units will connect to the network via the USB. How will it integrate in to my home network which consists of a Linksys WAP with 4 lan connections?

3) I now have an old 30 hour TiVo that will be replaced so I don't feel as nervous taking it apart and hacking it. Are there things I can do with this one which I bought back in April, 2000?

I know that these are broad questions but I just need to be pointed in the right direction so I can get started.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.
Val

I am fairly new to Tivo (less than a week) but after poking around on this forum was able to connect to my network for broadband connectivity. Here is what I have and what I did. In my home I have both wireless and powerline connections. Since I prefer the powerline stuff and had an extra bridge sitting around (don't ask, a long story) I chose to go that route.

I connected a Linksys USB100M to one of the USB ports of my Tivo and to the powerline bridge. On the other side of the powerline connection I have another bridge connecting into a port on my Linksys router (w/DHCP enabled). I than changed the dialing prefix to ,#401 and powered my machine off than on. Everything worked first time. If you search around on this forum there is a list of USB devices that work with the Tivo and I would stick to the list. As far as the wireless, after reading a lot of negative stories on this board I decided to stay away from it. However, I cannot understand why a wireless device (e.g. Linksys WEP11) connected to a USB100M connected to the Tivo wouldn't work. The WEP11 would be transparent to the Tivo and should work.

Anyway that is all that I know and hopefully it helps.

Are you saying that after setting the system up as you described, you were able to download the guide information from the internet? That would mean you don't have your new system connected to your phone line, is that correct? Do you have a subscription with Tivo or can you get the guide without a subscription?

So many questions...so much to learn

Yeah, just use the ,#401 dialing prefix and you'll be fine. You'll need a USB Ethernet Adapter such as the Linksys USB100M (see broadband (un)support).

Only wired adapters work at the moment. The Linksys WET11 can be used to connect to a wireless network. Do a search on WET11.

You can get a TurboNet adapter from http://www.9thtee.com to use on Series 1 Tivo's.

Search the message board on the above topics and you'll find all the information you could ever want.

Thank you, Isk and drice_az! This is exactly what I needed to get started.

I'm going to hook this up this weekend and I will definitely be back if I have any questions.

Thanks again!
Val

You definitely still need a subscription with Tivo.

OK, I have my series2 Tivo hooked up with the Linksys USB 10/100tx adapter and plugged into my Linksys router. I see the router on the Linksys and have successfully "called" over the internet for an update. When I try to FTP and the Tivo's drive, the Tivo keeps asking for authentication. What do I enter????
