interesting thing about hmo

I picked this up towards the bottom of today's chat and found it very interesting.

[16:52] <TiVoBill> The Music and Photos features can stream files from any
publically available IP address. There are no restrictions to subnet (only
for Multi-room viewing)

So does that mean you can show photos or play mp3's from a family or friend's computer as long as you have the IP and it's "open".

I've never heard about that feature before.

I believe you can.

At CES Pony showed me some still pix, and music clips with the HMO enabled TiVo, and said that they were located on a server back at the corp office..

That would be GREAT... Wow....

Imagine being able to share photos and music with people anywhere through Tivo!

I mean, yes anyone can do this now by downloading or on a website... But if it is something that can be done right from the living room as easy as grabbing the peanut!?

That would be great.... You can share with friends and family... or whomever!

I mean I never heard of this feature anywhere documented, but RJ you say you were at CES and were able to se epictures and music from Tivo home office (which is in Cali), then this must be possible.

I can't WAIT for HMO! I have a feeling there will be some great stuff even more than we are expecting!

In waiting,

Mike

Music might not be that great because of all the bottlenecks in between, but photos would be a no brainer...

Does that mean you can use your tivo to hack onto anyone's computer and view their pictures or music?

Actually, Tivo is NOT used to transmit photos and music TO people. HMO turns Tivo into a RECEIVER capable of displaying photos and playing music that is stored on a PC. You could have 1 PC in your house that is your server, and 3 or 4 Tivos that all play the same set of MP3s and photos.

There is ALREADY very cool technology that will let you share your photos and MP3s with friends and family: Its called WEB.

Put a Web Server on your PC and vioala!
Or even use some of that free webspace that many websites give away!

A better question for TivoPony would be:
Can I share out my MP3s/Photos to Somebody ELSE'S TIVO. I have a feeling that this doesn't work completely, since it seems to have been mentioned that the PC and TIVO may need to be on the same subnet, so me sharing MY photos (from my PC) with OTHER HMO users is unclear.

From the first post:

So the answer seems to be, yes.
