To be honest, I got the image from someone with a DSR6000 and it was said that that image will work on my DSR6000R01. I never gave it much thought to making an image of the setup of my TiVo unit until it died this time. I'm trying to get it back up and running, but it's been replaced by a series 2 unit from Hughes. The DSR6000R01 is out of warranty, so I should learn the imaging of drives with the Linux utilities so I can recover from any further problems.
The DSR6000R01 is a bad design that keeps too much hot air inside the unit since the only escape path is beneath the unit. It's a bad design oversight that the series 2 unit well fixes with the fan bloing out the back of the unit. The Hughes series 2 unit is much cooler to the touch now than the DSR6000R01 ever was after running for even 30 minutes.
I guess I'll fdisk it and scnadisk/ disk doctor the TiVo 40 GB HD and hope that the MFSrestore will fix things. The idea has worked before going from Fat32 corrupted, linux, back to FAT32 with no problems on a different HD for Windows use, so why shouldn't it work here? It passed all the manufacturer tests, so it may be the HD got too hot and it finally messed up some ones and zeros that make the file system, or something.
Either way, I'd like to get it working because a co-worker got a little snobby with me about his replayTV box when I asked for his ideas on some linux tools to help me with working on the HD. He's the linux guru that I know of, and having him exclaim the virtues of his replayTV without even trying to answer my question gets me a little ticked off. So, it has gotten personal now, and I intend to win if the HD is willing.
