I searched and searched and cannot believe this hasn't been answered before...

What is the safest method to power off a Phillips Series 1 tivo?

I did a "Restart the Recorder", then pulled the plug before the Tivo started it boot sequence (or what I think is the boot sequence)... BUT it seems to shutdown too fast (i.e., no long unix halt type delay). From hitting the final "enter" button to plug-pull, is only a couple of seconds or so. That is *way* too fast for a graceful linux shutdown.

Safest (actually, only way): yank the power cord. It won't do any harm. The root partition is mounted read-only.

Thanks... sounds good to me! Got a UPS so hopefully my Tivo won't have any more power-related hardware problems. Modem and serial port got fried in the span of one week (probably both by lightning) so ordered a Turbonet (from 9thtee.com) and just finished installing it. Works great! Easy to install (SA tivo here). and ordering/delivery process was smooth and quick--just the way I like it. :-)

I'm probably paranoid too but before I unplug my TiVo Series 2 machine, I unplug the video input and wait a few seconds. I think the TiVo stops recording at this time until a video input comes back. I could be wrong but what the hell, it seems to work for me. But then again, I don't unplug my TiVo too often either.

If you're deliberately powering down, it's ok to pull the cord. But do it from the end that goes into the outlet, not the socket on the back of the TiVo. That socket isn't designed for frequent disconnections and there are reports of the internal pins shifting.
