Replace bad "B" drive in SVR2000

Hi,

I was hoping to get some help from this great community. I currently have a SVR2000 which I had upgraded to two 80G hard drives about 2 years ago. I have an original image from the SVR2000 as well, from when the original A drive went bad (and I upgraded to an 80G drive).

Recently, my B drive went bad and I got a replacement drive through warranty, but after reading the Hinsdale How to, and searching through the boards here, I didn't see anything which addressed how to replace a B drive in a two drive system. Maybe I missed it, but I am wondering, do I need to "divorce" the A drive, and then rebless? Any help would be appreciated as it has been about 2 years since I did the upgrade, and I have really forgotten most of the tools, etc. Although I did already download the MFS tools 2.0, which I assume I will need. Thanks in advance for the help.

Noah

Yes, the A and B drive were 'married' and will only function as a pair. You can't just replace the B drive.

You must re-image from a backup file and repeat the upgrade.

This time you should use mfsadd rather than BlessTiVo to expand. The good news is that this may make your TiVo run a bit faster.

Thanks for the quick reply Robert!!

I reread through the Hinsdale How To, and now realized that I have to do some partitioning, which scares the hell out of me, now that I have Windows XP. So instead, I am going to run into my office, where I still have Windows 98 SE and will do it there. Just to make sure I am doing it right, could someone please verify this is the right procedure for me. I am reinstalling an old, original image from a Sony SVR2000, Tivo V3.0, single drive. I am going to try to get 2 working 80G drives. I realize this will wipe the data from my old, working A drive. I believe this is what I need to do:

1)Copy the image to c:\mnt\dos
2)Connect new A drive to secondary master (set jumpers accordingly)
3)Connect new B drive to primary slave " " "
4)Boot with MFS boot CD
5)at # type "mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos"
6)type "mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb"
7)type "umount -f -a -r"
8)Reinstall drives back into Tivo unit

Can someone verify? Thanks for your help!

Noah

You don't need to repartition. You should be able to read the backup off the Windows XP drive. The problem is that files on that partition can not be written, but that's probably a good thing in this case. Also, if Windows XP boots and writes a signature to your disk, you won't be any worse off than you are now!

The image needs to be C:\tivo.bak, /mnt/dos are directories in the Linux system, not Windows.

Otherwise, fine.

Thanks again Robert for your help!!!!

I have copied the image into the C:\ (root directory) as tivo.bak ,but am still getting an error message. I boot with the MFStools boot disk, check to make sure the drives show up ok, then at the # prompt type:

mkdir
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos
mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdc /dev/hdb

The computer responds with:

/mnt/dos/tivo.bak no such file or directory exists !!!!!

I have checked and it is all spelled correct, and in the root directory on the C: drive, any other ideas? Thanks again.

It was the oddest thing. I continued to look for other people having a similar problem. After reading others posts, I thought maybe I should use hda5 instead of hda1, but then I looked through the info that appeared when I did the MFStools boot CD, and it showed that hda1 was the correct partition. I then noticed that someone in a previous post suggested doing:

cd /mnt/dos

after doing the mkdir and mount commands. Then doing:

ls

to see if indeed the file was there. I did this AND THIS IS THE ONLY THING I DID DIFFERENTLY , and after seeing it there, I then did:

cd

to bring it back to the root directory, then did the mfsrestore and it worked like a charm (I haven't tested it, but it found the image and showed that the restore worked). Thanks for all your help Robert and the community!!!
