Question joe editor issues

I have installed a number of hacks into my tivo with success (tivoweb, tivoftpd, turbonet). But I am unable to get the joe editor to work. Keep in mind this is my first experience with Linux. These are the steps I took.

1. Ftp'd joe.tar.gz (from Steve Jenkins files) in binary format via WSftp
2. I then telneted (from windows XP dos promt). Then used the following commands.
3. cd /var/hack
4. gzip –d joe.tar.gz
5. cpio -idu -H tar < joe.tar
6. chmod 755 joe
7. ./joe testfile

I got these commands from steve's tivo network hack how to guide.
But I keep getting the error.

"cannot open /var/hack/joeerc"

'joeerc' is a ascii file that I was able to ftp over to my PC and read.

What am I doing wrong here?

I had a similar problem when I installed joe yesterday.

I put it in /var/hack/bin instead of /var/hack. Anytime I tried to run it, I got the message "cannot open /var/hack/joeerc". I thought this was strange, since joe and joeerc were both in /var/hack/bin, not /var/hack.

I still don't know what the problem was, but to solve it I just copied joeerc to /var/hack and all is good.

You might try 'chmod 755 /var/hack/joerc' (assuming it's properly located). This sets read permission (among others) on the file.

Try reuploading the joerc file in binary mode (or if you did that, try uploading in ascii).

Talking

I got it to work. Thanks for all your suggestions. My problem seemed to be that I installed the file in /var/hacks instead of /var/hack. When I tried to run out of /var/hacks, i got the error "could not find /var/hack/joerc". I guess in the joe file it defaults to look for the joerc file in /var/hack. I just placed the files in /var/hack and all is now well. :-)
