SOAK: HELP, My CD-ROM and DVD-RW Drives disappeared!

I KNOW someone else had this problem not long ago, but I can't seem to find the thread.

I have been ripping CDs to my hard drive all afternoon. I finish and decided to burn a compilation CD. My Drives are gone!

In My Computer, neither of my two drives show up. In the Device Manager, it shows the CD-ROM, but has the DVD-RW disabled and will not re-enable it. Any Ideas?

Astro,

Here is the solution I always suggest. It has worked for some, but not for all. Good luck!

Thanks John, pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by upper and lower filters entries?

does your BIOS acknowledge their existance?
if it does, remove your ide controllers from device manager and reboot.
They SHOULD be re-detected as your IDE controler is re-detected.

Sorry that didn't do it Astro. Maybe try uninstalling those two programs, see if that fixes it? If it doesn't redo my solution and see if it fixes it with those programs uninstalled? Again, good luck.

yes, they both show up in device manager, but the DVD-RW drive shows as disbaled and I am unable to re-enable it.

I am able to use the CD-rom, but it still doesn't show up under My Computer

Does the DVD work like the CD-Rom does? If you go to start-run and type E:\ (or whatever drive letter the DVD is) does that pull it up?

If it does, then the drives are just hidden, and fixing that will depend on your OS. If not, then you have a little bigger problem.

If you go into Device manager, and from the "View" menu (assuming Win2k or XP), select "Devices by connection", and drill down to your IDE controller and the primary and secondary controllers under that, where do the CD and DVD drives show up?

It's very likely that both drives are on the secondary channel. Enhanced IDE controllers have two channels, each of which can support 2 devices--master and slave (thank God I don't live in California, and I can still say that ). The problem with the master slave configuration is that if the master device starts flipping out, it will most often screw up the slave device.

If they do show up on the same channel, then you can try (if you're comfortable inside the computer) flipping the cable that they share around. Most new computers have their drives set to "cable select" for master slave config (I hate it, but it does make this easier). It might take actually flipping positions of the drives physically--the cables tend to be pretty short. Boot, and see if there's any change.
