Is there a way to connect to tivo service without a phone line?

I have had a sony series 2 80-hr dvr for several months now, and for most of the time there were no problems. However, everyone in my household has recently gotten cellular phones, and we no longer see any need for a land-line connection. I have a broadband connection through a cable modem, but I don't know if my tivo will be able to connect through it unless I purchase the home media option, which I won't do (too expensive). Can I connect through one of the USB ports, or do i have to subscibe to basic phone service JUST so my tivo will work?

-Sorry if this is an obvious question, I couldn't find any answers serching through the forums.

Broadband connectivity is software version 4.0 and up, standard on all Series 2 standalones. HMO is actually available even if you don't have broadband, though not as useful.

Not sure if it counts as an obvious question -- but it is covered thoroughly in Charles' excellent FAQ on many things TiVo. HMO is not required.

Keep the link handy -- can be very helpful

That was a little harsh, don't you think? This was his first post, and you are the first reply, so I don't see where "others" could have indicated anything.

ericgrv - As long as you buy one of the supported USB adapters you'll be able to make your daily call via your home network without any additional service fees. HMO is only required for the additional features such as music/photo streaming and web scheduling.

You missed the post (which was deleted) that he was actually responding to. Wasn't harsh enough, IMO.

No problem. I evidently didn't delete the quoted material from the troll in time. I must of missed by seconds! That's a weakness in the current system of removing troll messages, but I don't see any way around it. The OP had a legitimate question, and the troll gave an incorrect (but not trollish) response, so I decided I had to treat the response legitimately. I normally ignore the obvious troll messages.

Yes, though I suspect he's back under a new name.

Isn't it amazing how every time TiVo stock prices reach new spikes, we get a new troll trying to spread FUD?
