Grapefruit - Peal and eat, or slice and spoon?

Had some pretty good ruby's this week. The last few I tried pealing like an orange, and liberating the segments virtually whole. It worked pretty good, but don't think I've ever done it that way before.

What do you do?

Slice in half (through the "equator"). Segment with knife.. Eat each segment one at a time with a spoon.

Peal it. Throw away the fruit and eat the peal.

I have a friend who spent some time in South America. One day he started peeling a greapfruit like an orange and I thought he was nuts. I had never seen anyone eat one that way before. He said he hadn't seen it either until he was in South America, but that now he does it that way all the time. I'm personally still a slice and spoon guy.

We usually use the jsmeeker method, my brother-in-law even gave us a grapefruit knife a couple of Christmases ago.

I peel and eat it like an orange, only because I take it with me to work and it's less messy that way. Sometimes I'll cut it in half and eat it that way, but that requires a plate and spoon/knife and is much messier.

Growing up, we even had grapefruit spoons. They were narrow, with a serrated edge around the top of the spoon to make cutting the grapefruit wedges out easier. I don't eat them enough to warrant buying special utensils.

I've been fixing them to take to work for lunch. That's why the slice and spoon won't work for me.

When I tried pealing one the other day, I was surprised at how easily the segments pop out of the membrane. Tons easier when you're fixing a take away meal.

If I was sitting at home, I'd probably stick to the slice and spoon.

Anyone broiling them with sugar or other enhancements?

I like them right out of the refrigerator. Nice and cold.

Gotta slice in half, sprinkle sugar on (to make it less tart) and spoon em out - then squeeze what's left into a glass to drink Yummy...

I like eating them like I eat oranges by pealing them. When I was younger I ate them by slicing and eating with a spoon but it's too much of a hassle to do it that way. I love the juicy whole pieces I get when I peal it like an orange.

Ditto. I've never heard of anyone peeling a grapefruit.

I also squeeze the juice into my orange juice glass.

Yeah, but you probably didn't know that a banana would seperate into three equal (more or less) parts either.

Sounds like you grew up in my family

That is exactly what we always did......except we put a cherry on top.

Also, I used to put the sugar on, then let it sit for about 15 minutes. That way, the sugar worked it's way down into the fruit and kept it less tart all the way through.

My wife has made fun of me for 10 years because that is how I eat a grapefruit.

Of course she comes running when I start peeling because she wants some. They are much better eaten that way.

Pull the grapefruit off the tree in the backyard, quarter it with a pocket knife, then peel the quarters. It makes for a nice break while mowing the yard. Be sure to rinse the knife.
