Question Extinct Fast Food

So I'm driving to work today and I'm suddenly thinking about this place I used to enjoy years ago called Zantigo Taco. They had some really great stuff (fast food great is not the same as REAL food great, I know) but they were bought out and shut down by Taco Bell (those ba$tards!).

Another place I used to kind of like but never see anymore is RAX Roast Beef, kind of a poor man's Arby's (okay, poorer man's).

Any places you used to like but are no more?

Naugles (I think that was how it was spelled). It was like a cross between Taco Bell & Del Taco, but better!

This isn't really a response to the question, but:

There are a couple of national Fast Food chains that I'd regularly patronize if they had a store reasonably near to where I work and/or live but they don't.

They are:

Dairy Queen (Nearest store about 40 miles away.)

Jack in the Box (Nearest store about 60 miles away.)

Man, I used to love Rax. Really good roast beef sandwiches and the best milkshakes.

As as kid, I ate at Burger Chef all the time. Whatever happened to them?

Oh...and I remember a place in the midwest (Omaha?) called Runza Hut (a runza is an odd sort of cabbage & seasoned meat roll). Very different and a nice change of pace. Anyone know if they still exist?

[edit]: I guess they still do. Maybe I imagined the cabbage? [edit again]: Maybe I didn't!

I believe they were bought out by Hardee's. A few years back (before making the switch to Thickburgers), Hardee's brought back 'The Big Chef' burger, but I don't think it lasted too long.

Where I went to college, we had a taco chain called Taco John's. Different variety from Taco Bell, and I used to love their Potato Ole's. I know they were just glorified tater tots, but they were good!

I also used to love Noble Roman's Pizza. The only place I've found it lately is at the food counter of a local bowling alley. :-(

And finally, the one I miss the most....Dunkin' Donuts. After Krispy Kreme hit STL, all the Dunkin' Donuts were bought out by some POS called Donut King, which then closed half the stores, and turned the other half into combination donut and liquor stores. Figure that one out. I was impressed when I went to Boston last summer, since there are roughtly 1,000 Dunkin' Donuts in Boston alone! I ate there almost every day. Good stuff!

I think there's still a couple of these around. Maybe at rest stops along I-95.

A lot of cool fast-food places don't make it this far south... we don't have Hardees or Krystal in the Fort Lauderdale area..........

One place that's now extinct is Sonic.

I miss "Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken"

Not extinct, but nowhere near me are...

Jack in the Box
In-N-Out Burger

(probably just as well those aren't near me)

I still see ads for Sonic from time to time. Didn't Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie work at one during "The Simple Life"?

Maybe they pulled out of your area though.

There are plenty of Sonics around this area, they keep opening more and more of them up too.

I was going to mention PP in my thread but thought nobody would no what I was talking about.

It seems that the RR that are left are basically Hardee's, who bought them. I loved the Roast Beef sandwich because I loved the sauce. When Hardee's bought them it changed. I don't like cole slaw but I lot of people I knew love it there.

All the Arby's in this area are owned by the same franchisee.

That franchisee bought all the Rax stores a little over 10 years ago. Those that weren't particularly close to an Arby's, they converted to an Arby's, those that were, they re-sold to someone who wouldn't operate them as a Rax.

I was keenly aware of why the Rax's were all closing because I was dating a young lady who worked in the headquarters of that Arby's franchisee at the time.

I miss the A&W restaurant that was in my home town in MA when I was a kid. There was also a little drive-up burger place called Burger Express in the area that disappeared 10+ years ago...

As far as I can tell, they're doing well.

I like their food, but you have to get it to go!

Eating while smelling the exhaust from 20 other vehicles while the people in the car next to you have the hip-hop with the NC-17 rated lyrics turned up to "jet-engine-at-10-feet" decibel levels boom-booming through their 2000 watt subwofer system that completely fills their trunk and back seat just doesn't cut it for me!

Taco John's still exist. I visited one last October in Iowa City. Love the taco burgers.

Sonic is definately still in business, in fact they just built a new corporate headquarters in downtown OKC on the bricktown canal.

The one that I miss was the Dillburger in Iowa City. Basically they seasoned their burgers with dill, had fried dill pickles and were very good fast food. Unfortunately they also went out of business in the late 90's.
